I agree and disagree. I agree about the "going on about anatomy" part. There's a certain kind of pedantic mind that responds to sexy comic book covers with "I'm gonna redline this drawing and point out all the anatomy mistakes and correct it to be more realistic" which... kinda misses the point. Of art, and also why the sexy comic book covers are irritating.

Where I disagree (or agree with the pedantic type I described above) is that I do find boobs and butt poses really creepy and unappealing to look at -- and mainly because of the anatomy issues! The exaggerated anatomy can get so wonky that the person's spine literally looks broken. Even though the intent is to exaggerate for the sake of sexiness, often it comes off looking akin to a broken arm -- I'm no longer thinking "sexy! hot!" and am now thinking "omg are they okay?!" That's visually what many of those poses telegraph. If we're talking about exaggerated poses done for the sexy, I much prefer arched back or ass in the air. That looks hot and sexy and not mangled. Well, actually, there are plenty of bad artists that make it look mangled, but I feel like the boobs and butt pose is more likely to telegraph mangled and painful than other forms of weird anatomy exaggerations.

I dunno, this is incoherent. I guess my point is that I do think "blind adherence to accurate anatomy is a must" is a weird position, but I also think that the artist's skill and understanding of real anatomy really does affect how successful they are at their goal of being sexy, and it's fair for women who understand how female anatomy works to look at some of the depictions that artists think are sexy and find that the sexiness is seriously undermined by how broken/painful/uncanny/wonky the anatomy is.

But people sexualize the grotesque. That's a fairly common thing.

Is that what's going on with the boobs-n-butt pose, though?

I dunno, why do YOU think people get off on broken-looking limbs?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think they get off on the titties and the butts, not the broken anatomy

There's also a recognisable difference between grotesque art and 'can't draw for shit.'
