I think it's valid to object to it just because of how pervasive it all is.

The nitpicky anatomy criticisms are so stupid and annoying because, yes, exaggeration is the whole point.

Okay, but the fact that the exaggeration are all to turn men on is a problem. Female characters are all exaggerated to get men off, and male characters are exaggerated to the male power fantasy. The fact that it is all exaggerated in a male POV and never a female one is a problem.

Exaggeration, yes. Fucked up anatomy with broken spines, no.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit. I studied art in University. I also love comics.

Not all comic art is good art. Not all comic artists are good artists. After reading so many comics it's not that hard to identify the places where an artist reaches for something and makes an awkward miss, as opposed to deliberate genre appropriate style choices.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I agree and disagree. I agree about the "going on about anatomy" part. There's a certain kind of pedantic mind that responds to sexy comic book covers with "I'm gonna redline this drawing and point out all the anatomy mistakes and correct it to be more realistic" which... kinda misses the point. Of art, and also why the sexy comic book covers are irritating.

Where I disagree (or agree with the pedantic type I described above) is that I do find boobs and butt poses really creepy and unappealing to look at -- and mainly because of the anatomy issues! The exaggerated anatomy can get so wonky that the person's spine literally looks broken. Even though the intent is to exaggerate for the sake of sexiness, often it comes off looking akin to a broken arm -- I'm no longer thinking "sexy! hot!" and am now thinking "omg are they okay?!" That's visually what many of those poses telegraph. If we're talking about exaggerated poses done for the sexy, I much prefer arched back or ass in the air. That looks hot and sexy and not mangled. Well, actually, there are plenty of bad artists that make it look mangled, but I feel like the boobs and butt pose is more likely to telegraph mangled and painful than other forms of weird anatomy exaggerations.

I dunno, this is incoherent. I guess my point is that I do think "blind adherence to accurate anatomy is a must" is a weird position, but I also think that the artist's skill and understanding of real anatomy really does affect how successful they are at their goal of being sexy, and it's fair for women who understand how female anatomy works to look at some of the depictions that artists think are sexy and find that the sexiness is seriously undermined by how broken/painful/uncanny/wonky the anatomy is.

"Feeling right" hahahahahahh

Yes, it feels so right when you dislocate a woman's tiny spine to present her gigantic ass and balloon boobs forward in the same frame.

Uh.

All does it does is make me wince and think that comics are only designed to appeal to people who fap off to women's breasts and asses and no one else, and that includes a whole shit ton of men and women and others (including immature people) who *don't*. And if you don't think there's a problem with that, then there's a problem with your thinking.

I don't like how pervasive the boobs+butt pose is. I don't like how women (or teens, or young girls in some cases) get the short end of the stick when it comes to being portrayed in art. There's no reason for Black Widow or Captain Marvel or whoever to have her ass and tits both thrust way out in 99% of the poses their drawn in. Not every piece of art should be about getting dudes off.

My problem with a lot of the anti-boobs+butt brigade is that they criticize the anatomy on pictures where the anatomy is pretty much fine. Some women really ARE naturally skinny. Some women really do have small waists. Plenty of women have big breasts. Not everyone is built like a rectangle. And most people are in fact flexible enough that they can angle their ass one way and their chest slightly another way.

Or they go after shit where the goofy anatomy is entirely the point, like fetish art. (Yeah, Hentai Man can't really fuck Moe Girl in the nipples. Reverse-vore also isn't realistic. And tentacle porn? That's fake too. News at eleven.)

(I'm also not a fan of criticizing amateur artists as if they should be held to the same standard as a major corporation in terms of their art quality and content. It's really not a crisis if some 15-year-old otaku in Japan is drawing fanart of his favorite anime babes with impossibly giant honkers.)

Look, I love big boobs, and yes, there are people who get mad because the boobs are there at all. I agree those people are annoying.

Big boobs isn't what makes some comic art bad. Or big muscles, for that matter.

But there ARE common mistakes and unintended anatomical horrors made in drawings made by untrained or poorly trained artists that's grating to see over and over, just like it's possible to hear the difference between off key untrained singing and a trained singer singing a disturbing song.

And for whatever reason, the Big Two will elevate and celebrate some mediocre as fuck bro artist.

Sometimes we like things in spite of shitty art, and sometimes even in part because the shitty art is part of that, and that's OK too.

I've been an artist all my life and there's a big difference between exaggeration from someone with a competent understanding of the fundamentals of anatomy, and exaggeration by someone who knows fuck all about what they're doing and tries to pass it off as "their style". Even a Loony Tunes artist knows the rules before they break them, and that's as cartoony as it gets. A comic book hero is supposed to be at least a little more realistic than slapstick funny animals.

if the first goal of the art is to turn men on, then the goal of telling a good story in a visual medium is sacrificed and sacrificed when it comes to female characters in particular

yeah I know some people laugh at the anatomy in stuff that is mostly meant for porn like Hellblade or whatever, but the vast majority of complaints are about comics that are theoretically telling a story, that tell interesting and dynamic stories with their male characters, where the *writing* may even be laboring to tell a compelling story with the female characters - and then the art only contributes to making men horny

it's a disservice to everyone in the process who wan't an action story instead of porn

and it's not like men can't get actual porn elsewhere

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes, I too disdain the phillistines who can’t appreciate the artistic vision of comely maidens with swivel-spines

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care that a lot of comic art is meant to be sexy or meant for a male gaze (I mean, I'd like more female gaze in western comics, of course), but there is a point where exaggeration of anatomy goes too far and it stops looking sexy and just looks weird and inhuman (where that point is will differ by individual, and maybe some people have no limit, but there will be a point where the majority of people have bailed off the sexy train). I think a lot of it is down to some artists just not being very good (both on a technical level of drawing human anatomy and on a more stylistic and communicative level where they can't stop themselves from exaggerating), even though sometimes those artists have gotten a lot of big-name comic work.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but it’s difficult to argue that Rob Liefeld some artists’ work succeeds at being so appealing that you can overlook how bad heavily stylized it is. (Seriously. Spines do not work that way. Neither do hips. Or feet.)

On the other hand, I would argue that if your primary objective is adding to the spank bank of your audience, maybe mainstream comics isn’t the best place for your...talent.

There's a difference between drawing someone with legitimately large boobs or a noticeably curvaceous butt, and outright drawing anatomically impossible poses in order to exaggerate them absurdly.

Yeah, the artistic purpose and talent isn't what they're complaining about.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You're an utter moron OP and your comment shows as such.
You fail to understand any of the reasons why people may object to the oversexualisation of women in comics because you clearly don't have the brain capacity to.

But yes go on pretending that it's 'art' and putting down people with legitimate reasons to not like it because you don't understand comics in the society in which they are set.
