Manga/Comic Recs

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want new series to read. No horror, isekai, or superheroes please, but everything else is fair game. Unique/good art and characterization are huge pluses.

- Hikaru No Go
- Victorian Romance Emma (and probably Bride's Story, which I've only read the first two volumes of)
- The early parts of Elfquest (it's all up on their website, too)
- Strangers in Paradise
- Battle Angel Alita (warning: for all the gorgeous art, it's also mega gory in the early parts)
- Chrono Crusade
- Maison Ikkoku is Rumiko Takahashi doing slice of life and being really good at it in all the most funny and bittersweet of ways

NAYRT I’m reading A Bride’s Story and I like it even more with each consecutive volume.

Bride's Story is so beautiful I want to dive right into the page

Unique art? Hmm...
~ All Out! is a sports anime with really interesting and distinctive character design. I really enjoyed it! It's pretty short though.
~ Megalobox has an amazing style and a great soundtrack, but I found the story a little dull.
~ The Saga of Tanya the Evil has cool animation and a rather original story, but I guess it's technically isekai? Very light on fantasy elements, though, so I'd still suggest checking it out.
~ ZOMBIELAND SAGA is about zombie idols.

Manga recommendations
~ Eyeshield 21 has really distinctive characters and a pretty cool style, though your suspension of disbelief may be strained by some of the ridiculous themed schools/teams the protagonists go up against.
~ Silver Spoon is by Hiromu Arakawa, of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, so that tells you all you need to know about the art. It's about a city boy who decides to go to an agricultural high school in rural Japan, even though he's never even seen a horse before and isn't entirely clear on where eggs come from...

Eyeshield is literally the best, has extremely great art style, and amazing characters!

Comics:
Largo Winch
James Bond - The current Dynamite run is pretty great
Cowboy Ninja Viking
Death Vigil
Sunstone
Scooby Doo Apocalypse (Being honest it's sort of horror, but not really)
Heathen
Ragnarok

Manga:
Komi Can't Communicate
Please tell me Galko-chan
Konosuba
Monster Musume - Hey, you said everything else is fair game

Podcast / Youtube Recs

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I am looking for good, chill podcast and youtube recs that are funny, not annoying, and not involved in torrents of endless stupid nerd drama.

Also, in particular, if anyone knows any good paranormal / conspiracy / urban myth podcasts or shows that are skeptical but not super aggressive about it, I would be very interested in that. Stoner-ish is OK.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you find funny or annoying? Hard to share recs without knowing that.

Yeah, sorry, I know it's a loose definition but I'm also not sure how to be more specific. I like Jenny Nicholson a lot if that helps.

Thinking Sideways is pretty good. I listen to them a lot. They do paranormal / conspiracy / urban myth / true crime stuff. Their whole thing is basically debunking things and coming up with their own sane theories. Some eps are better than others. They do best if it's a really meaty case, wheras some of the smaller cases are just like "so some UFO nut said x, but really it was y. That's all for today, folks!"

Episode 127 - Lake City Quite Pills is my favorite that I've listened to so far. Episode 208-Tina Watson is a really good crime one for a famous case. Episode 010-Spanish Flu is an early ep that's REALLY good if you're interested in an in-depth look at some of the less known causes of the epidemic.

ETA: They're very skeptical in general, sometimes more than I prefer, but they keep a pretty light tone about it.

Cox 'n Crendor. Some of the earliest episodes are pretty rough audio-wise but the content is still good.

Anybody have any recs for a fantasy or sci-fi novel (or series) with a pretty strong central romance, but also a decent plot.

I have pretty much zero experience with genre fiction, so I'm completely out of my element here. I know I want romance. But I also know I don't want to read romance novels. I want interesting characters doing cool and important things - while also falling in love.

I'm good with het or m/m. YA is also fine with me.

Lois McMaster Bujold is really good at what you're looking for. I would start with the Chalion books, personally.

AYRT - Awesome, thank you! I'll definitely check her out, starting with the ones you recommended. :)

J-Drama Recs

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Preferably shows that aired in the last decade. Not interested in historical dramas, but everything else is fair game.

If you like crime-ish (more medical/coroner-esque), and adorable characters, Voice was good: https://wiki.d-addicts.com/Voice

If you want your soul crushed, watch Last Friends: https://wiki.d-addicts.com/Last_Friends

I've watched more, but as you can tell by the air-dates, not super recently, sorry! XD I will probably be stalking this thread though too, in case other people share recs.

F/F fic

(Anonymous) 2019-02-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Preferably long and plotty; any pairing but I'm generally not into anime/manga fandoms

There was a secret about this like two days ago but if you're desperate,

https://archiveofourown.org/works/15011501/chapters/34796255

It's an anime fandom but it's AU and set in the US so it might as well be an original story.

Since I'm not sure what "long" means for you, I'm just going to rec some authors whose works I have enjoyed:

https://archiveofourown.org/users/dollsome/pseuds/dollsome/works
https://archiveofourown.org/users/ellydash/pseuds/ellydash/works

Fandoms to check out for F/F stories: Grace and Frankie, Killing Eve, Once Upon A Time, Orphan Black, Rizzoli & Isles

For more fandoms with great femslash potential, you might want to have a look at [personal profile] letzan's Femslash Week in Review: https://letzan.dreamwidth.org/tag/femslash+week+in+review

Stony fic that won't make me cry.

If such a thing even exists. Jesus, even the crack turns feelsy. The only other kind I see is really schmoopy fluff. Help me, kaijinscendre. You're my only hope.
