Anybody have any recs for a fantasy or sci-fi novel (or series) with a pretty strong central romance, but also a decent plot.

I have pretty much zero experience with genre fiction, so I'm completely out of my element here. I know I want romance. But I also know I don't want to read romance novels. I want interesting characters doing cool and important things - while also falling in love.

I'm good with het or m/m. YA is also fine with me.

Lois McMaster Bujold is really good at what you're looking for. I would start with the Chalion books, personally.

Does she write het or m/m or f/f relationships? Asking for a friend. >.>

IIRC the primary romances are het.

AYRT - Awesome, thank you! I'll definitely check her out, starting with the ones you recommended. :)
