(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)I get a bit annoyed too when people call me talented, cos it does sound a lot of the time like it's the only reason I'm any good at drawing. In reality, it took me 20 years to become good - maybe there is some talent in me, after all, but more like, yeah, I like the process of drawing and I understand colouring slightly better than an average person.
In the same time - I can carry a tune decently, but no one calls me a talented singer because I was never trained to sing and didn't spend 20 years practising.

I've gotten complimented a lot on my art, and it's a major pet peeve when people gush about how talented I am. Especially since it's nearly always paired with some statement like "I can't even draw a straight line hahaha" or "you're so lucky to be born with such a gift!".
I'm not naturally artistically "gifted". Not even close. This shit doesn't come naturally. I'm average at best. But I've worked my ass off practicing for hours every day for decades, so I'm alright at it.
Someone above mentioned that people talk about mental and physical skills different, and I think that's definitely true. Like, no one would go up to an olympic athlete and be like "wow ur so naturally gifted I wish I was born with that kind of skill!" because that would be fucking idiotic. You have to train for that shit. But when it comes to non-physical skills people act like you either have them or you don't, like you were just born knowing how to write well or play the piano.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 11:42 am (UTC)(link)It also doesn't occur to them that art is also _taught_ just like Maths or Chemistry and without it, becoming good is rather difficult and takes even more time. ('My 3 year old son could paint this' - no, dear, he couldn't. It's the lack of understanding how art works that makes you think that.)
Talent, at best, may be an elevated interest in a subject, persistence, and some brain processing that allows you to learn quicker/notice more/connect more dots (which on itself is useless without putting effort in developing it). What people mean by talent is more like 'nature/god gave you this amazing gift and you're sort of a vessel that contains it and your conscious input into it is minimal and irrelevant'. That is annoying.
