I've heard good things about My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and I'm sure it's a great piece of work. I would have bought it immediately if I hadn't been so put off by the couple of pages from it that someone posted. In them, the author (it's an autobiography) is shown pictures of a naked man and feels no sexual attraction. And that's supposed to be a "lesbian experience."

I hate, hate the implication that if you're attracted to a gender, you're attracted to everyone who is that gender so if you see a sexy image of one and are not attracted, you are not into the entire gender. I'm bisexual, and most pictures of naked men and women do nothing for me. My bitter takeaway from those pages was, "Author, get over yourself, you're not as much of a special little Not Like Those Slutty Non-Lesbian Girls Who Get Wet Over Every Dick They See as you think."

That seems like a slight overreaction ngl

...that’s clearly just visual short hand for her saying she has never been attracted to men, which is a common part of the lesbian experience. Like, yes there is more to attraction than sexy photos, but it’s an easy way to show an audience a nebulous concept (lack of attraction) in a way people will understand, especially since it’s paired with images of the author being aroused by photos of sexy women.

Also, My Lesbian Experience with Lonliness is not making any statement about lgbt culture or a overarching experience- it’s s comic memoir about the author’s fairly isolated struggle with mental illness and her sexuality. You seem to be really jumping to conclusions and looking to get offended.

Yeah, maybe it just bothers me because almost everyone commenting on the picture was taking it literally instead of as visual shorthand. "This is so relatable! It's exactly how I realized I was a lesbian, too!" as if seeing a naked man was the telling point instead of just one part of being a lesbian.

DA

TBH, a lot of commentary about the manga really frustrated me for that reason, even though I enjoyed the manga itself. For anyone who's dealt with mental health shit or figuring out who they are, it's an incredibly relatable autobiography, but because of that it's very easy to distort what the manga was saying and make it about yourself.
