This is Craig Dean:

Craig starts dating Sarah, and John Paul tries to bury his growing feelings for Craig by dating Sarah's friend Hannah. This is Sarah with John Paul and Craig:

On Hannah's 18th birthday, he breaks down and admits to Craig that he's in love with him. Craig is angry and John Paul is mortified, but neither wants to lose their friendship. At the school dance-off, the boys go off together and get drunk, and Craig kisses John Paul. They're spotted by Hannah, who tells everyone. Craig denies being gay, but John Paul comes out, earning him scorn from his classmates and football teammates. Craig beats him up. With the support of his family (mother and 5 sisters), John Paul stands proud, and eventually he and Craig make up.

John Paul meets and starts to date a fellow dj named Spike. This is John Paul with Spike:

Craig can't handle the thought of John Paul and Spike together, and he storms out of an exam to find out if John Paul still loves him. They have sex, and then Craig acts like an ass. What's John Paul's playlist? It's such a great thing! You go to the playlist, and it has all of the clips for John Paul's storyline set in order, so you don't have to hunt down clips. There's a little playlist menu on the right hand side of the screen, so you just click "Play Next" and move to the next clip. (although I think one or two of the clips have been deleted since the playlists were put up, they're still a good resource for YouTube viewing) You can scroll down the list, too, so if you want to watch only clips after McDean day, you can skip ahead.

I don't have any kind of official McDean playlist, but I do have a mental one. And one time I tried to get my favorite radio station to play I Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got just so I could think about John Paul and Craig on my drive home. *pouts* They didn't play it.

So now John Paul is alone and heartbroken. After a while of living in the halls at college, he moves back home. Shortly after, his mother offers to let a priest named Kieron stay with them. This is Father Kieron Hobbs:

While comforting John Paul on his dismal lovelife, Kieron admits to being gay, although he says he takes his vow of celibacy seriously. Helping one of John Paul's sisters at a fashion show, that vow is tested , and John Paul and Kieron kiss (clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAG3bLVC8GA&feature=PlayList&p=0F47861D5F9B2DE8&index=9)) After debating the wisdom of getting involved and a bout of jealousy over Kieron's friendship with local transvestite Kris, John Paul and Kieron begin a secret affair. (Are we seeing a pattern?)

Their relationship is very up-and-down, and during one of their rough patches, Kieron moves out of the McQueens' house and shares a flat with Niall, the hairdresser who is secretly John Paul's long lost evil brother. During their good periods, though, John Paul and Kieron are great together. This is them being sweet:

Things seem to be going well when Niall manipulates things so that John Paul's mum finds out about the affair. She outs them in the middle of a wedding. Kieron quits the church, and he and John Paul decide to form a civil partnership. Soon John Paul begins to feel rushed, though, and tries to slow things down. This hurts Kieron, who has lost so much. In the midst of this, Craig comes back to the village. Kieron demands that John Paul prove he's over Craig by marrying him immediately, which John Paul can't handle. They break up. Craig sees his chance and makes a move on John Paul, and they end up back in bed. Meanwhile, Kieron finds out that Niall is the lost McQueen and confronts him with it. Niall murders him and stages it as a suicide. And that's about where we are now, dealing with the aftermath and waiting to see if John Paul and Craig can get it back together.

For all that I love John Paul, I'm really picky about fic for him, and a lot of what's out there uses "limpid blue eyes" and "one true soulmate" language, which just. No. There is some good stuff, though.

Just went through the first half, and I gotta say Craig and John Paul or sooo cute together. They had me going awww so often.

Also, for a soap, they are surprisingly good actors. Whenever I happen upon a german soap, the acting is usually so mind-numbingly bad, it's hard to watch more than a minute or two.

You're welcome! It didn't seem like I was putting in very much while I was writing and doing the links, but when I went to post it and couldn't fit it in one comment, I realized I'd maybe been excessive.

Craig and John Paul are cute together. And when you think about how dysfunctional their relationship usually is, that says a lot about the acting. Not that there aren't moments of cheese, but on the whole, the cast is really talented.

I've had a lot of people rec Verbotene Liebe and Alles was Zählt to me, but I haven't put in the time to do more than glance at them. If I watch them, I'll try to keep my expectations for the acting down. :o)

I have no problem being friended. The more, the merrier, I say.

I haven't seen the shows, because when I'm at university I don't have a tv. I just rely on the downloads. Besides, I usually watch the shows in English anyway, because it takes forever until they are aired here.

I was watching Luke and Noah's storyline on YouTube, and one of the related videos off on the side was of John Paul and Craig. I clicked the link, and didn't come up for air for hours. It is too bad that Luke and Noah have been kept so restrained.

But, I know what you mean. I love these guys SO MUCH! I think they're one of the best couples I've ever seen on TV, both straight and gay.

I can't work out how people can compare them to Luke and Noah. OK, so they're both gay relationships in television soap operas, but that's where it ends, right? Cos Luke and Noah do nothing and have been so slow, and kinda wooden, compared to John Paul and Craig. The chemistry for JP/C is so sizzling sometimes, and it's cute at others, and overall, you get a real feeling that they love eachother. I don't follow Luke and Noah, but I'm not sure you'd get that any time. /little rant.

I've never seen anyone say that Luke and Noah are similar to JP/Craig or JP/Kieron. The discussion usually goes like this: "Wow, the network is really screwing around with Luke and Noah. You should see how much better gay relationships are treated in soaps like Hollyoaks. Here, have some clips!"

You'll probably find that a lot (if not most) Luke/Noah fans are incredibly frustrated and disappointed with they way the couple have been treated. I know I am >:(

I'm getting ready to have my heart broken. I just discovered this storyline today and already adore Kieron to pieces ;___;

There are comparison clips on youtube, and comparisons have been made over on afterelton.com too (they do some smashing reviews of JPC btw) TBF, people have discussed which soap does what better, but personally, I think HO wins everytime. I'm so proud to have a soap which can do what it's done. I think it's gone a long way to help teens who are unsure of their sexuality or just people who aren't sure about homosexuality.

Yeah, I read that there was a whole campaign about Luke and Noah because they were being so uncoupley for a couple it was unreal. If one of the soaps I watch was like that (denying part of the story for no real reason) I'd be a bit gutted - I'm not surprised people feel frustrated. I totes would.

Interesting! I didn't realise that. I agree with Allyndra in that there are some similarities in the beginning but there's no contest - Hollyoaks wins, hands down. It's really a shame that ATWT is so scared of upsetting the fundies. Van Hansis (who plays Luke) is an excellent actor and it's always a joy to watch him. Plus ATWT did a good job earlier in the series and there are some really beautiful and poignant Luke scenes. It's a shame that it's gone downhill :(

HO has done a wonderful job, from the clips I've seen. I'm really impressed.

Luke and Noah - OMG. I gave up watching the clips when the Ameera storyline began. Ameera is a woman from Iraq who knew Noah's dad. She needs to get away because apparently people in Iraq want to kill her because she and her mother were nice to an American (please note that this is just what I have read online so it could be wrong but it pissed me off like whoa). Noah marries her so she can stay in the US and be safe. I did see a clip where Luke and Noah kiss while he is still married but I have no idea what's happening. Aside from the treatment of the gay characters, I really did not want to see any racist/imperialist stereotyping or commentary, so I stopped watching.

Heh, well, work is done and now I'm going to watch a bunch of clips. The last clip was of Kieron moving out with Niell (I think that's how it's spelt?) and they're at some gambling event where a printing mistakes means that all drinks are free instead of one per customer.

Kieron will live on for me. He can have hot-man loving with anyone he wants. Hey, maybe with Luke! *starts plotting HO/ATWT crossover*

Hours? That's some obsession. You have no idea. One night I got half an hour of sleep, because I couldn't make myself stop watching the clips until 6:00 am. It was a little scary and a lot embarrassing, getting that caught up. I got digital cable just so I could watch Hollyoaks on BBC America. And then they stopped showing it. *shakes head* But I do a good impression of a sane person in front of others. :o)

Early on, the Luke/Noah and John Paul/Craig storylines had a lot of similarities. Gay boy falls for his seemingly straight (dark haired) friend. Seemingly straight friend throws himself in a relationship with a pretty girl. Seemingly straight friend kisses gay boy but denies being gay himself. But after this point, Hollyoaks let the boys move into an intense relationship, with a storyline that was all about them. As the World Turns kept Luke and Noah on the sidelines, stagnating for months.

Also, some of the difference might be in the way the shows are structured. American soaps air during the day, for an audience of people who are doing activities around their homes while also watching the show. The writers know this, so they build in a lot of repetition and redundancy, so if you miss a plot point while you're getting the laundry put away, you can catch it again later in the epsiode (or later in the week). I understand why they do it, but I think it drags down the energy and emotion of the performances. But I know that much of the reason for Luke and Noah's ... blandness is that gay relationships truly are controversial here. I forget sometimes, but then I hear a comment or a slur, and remember how many people find homosexuality distasteful and immoral. I think ATWT has been afraid to push, in case the full weight of conservative Christian rage fall upon them.

Those final scenes of Kieron hurt, but Jake and Barry did an amazing job with them.

half an hour of sleep? Y'see, this is where I reveal my own little fandomsecret: JP/Craig makes me stay up too. One night I spent 3 hours watching the YT videos, and another I stayed up to read fic. I've never been up till 6am, but I can see how I could have done that. I've certainly spent a *lot* of time with them, and it's kinda sad how I can quote stuff now :S (but ssshh. No-one in RL knows my secret. It's best kept that way, I feel)

I'm kinda gutted they stopped showing Hollyoaks on BBC America. It woulda been good to have a British Soap on there. Or do they have that already? And introducing the awesomeness of JP/Craig to the nation!

I spose, from that perspective, they're comparable. But comparing the emotion?

This week, there will be a JPC 'black hole' - we won't see them for a while - but not seeing a couple for months? That's just evil. How a show can expect their audience to get behind anything if they do that confuses me. And it's not like that'd ever happen with a straight couple!

I love how you said "Hollyoaks let the boys move into an intense relationship", because, if there's no other way to describe it, "intense" is it. I don't think I've seen anything so intense for a while. I mean, I can't really name a couple barring films that have such an intensity about them. And "let" too, like it was a natural thing, something that was kinda inevitable. That's so cute!

Hollyoaks airs before the watershed, which is why a lot of people were amazed when they first saw JP and Craig in bed. With few clothes on! (They also cover the missing of plot points by showing HO a lot: the previous show is on an hour before the show airs on terrestial tv, then the next episode is one straight after that on digital, then there's +1 channels, and to top it all off, there's one big glorious omnibus on sundays. Which is quite popular with the hungover adults, apparently. (Last sunday's was, like, Craig-tacular!)

I forget how controversial gay relationships are in America. I'm so used to the slash from fandom so it doesn't bother me (unless it bothers me in a good way ;P) but there are people having gay marriages now, and being out and proud. And I love that it's all a bit better for them :) However, while HO has been great at pushing the gay boat out, there are some times that I wonder if they are as open as they think they are. Sometimes they'll be weeks without JP and Craig, or JP in general, and I just get the impression it's because they don't want to put off the fans which aren't so "used" to homosexuality.

If Jake and Barry don't get awesome things for their awesome acting, it'll be sacriledge (sp?). Whilst watching the episode, I found myself more caring about Kieron than JP/Craig. You must understand how much that means.

Why are you sorry for JP/Craig spamming? You should be sorry it's not done more often! and with links and fics and everything! There is *so* not enough good fic of these two... I just want some fluff... is that too much to ask?

I'm worried, too. It would be so easy to do this ending badly, and that would make me so sad.

They've done alright so far. I mean, the re-union of JP and Craig was something I hated at first. (Well, OK, not hated - I could never hate McDean - but I didn't like it) But now, I love it. It's brilliant, so full of passion, and it balances the Kieron/Niall scenes so well. If that episode does not win "Best Episode" at those Soap Awards, I will... er... do something drastic.

It would be easy to do it badly. I mean, this is a soap after all, where people get off on doing things the wrong way, but they've had such a good reaction to JPC, and I feel they kinda owe it to the characters to have them be happy together. That said, even though I've seen spoiler pics, I can't be sure what's going to happen... :S
