[Doctor Who, "It Takes You Away"]

You know, to be honest, until you mentioned it, I didn't really notice that this is kind of a theme in DW in general, even old!Who.

Like, the Doctor does this drive-by saving but there's all this little stuff that happened/happens during the Big Thing that never gets addressed or fixed, and I have to wonder if things just go to shit again after the Doctor is gone.

Verity has pointed out that at least some of the time in this season the Doctor stays around and deals with consequences a little bit more than previously, such as attending the funeral in ... I think it was Kerblam?

I'm fairly certain that there are episodes that address the idea (at least in Old Who). But ultimately, it's just like... not that interesting dramatically, at least not as a sustained critique. Because really, it's a function of the episodic TV medium, more than it's a problem with the Doctor as a character.

AYRT true, there are probably dozens (hundreds) of examples from non-Who TV where the same type of thing happens.

Yeah, there are some great things about the episode, but that was just... seriously?

And I think that the elaborate "scare her into staying inside by making her think there are monsters in the woods" was hardly better than just locking her in the house.

If he was that depressed and unable to parent, send her to Olso to relatives or friends, ffs.

Given that part of the silent advice the Doctor gave Ryan was: "Find someone to take care of her" I'm going to assume that there was an off-screen conversation where they tracked down family-or-friends and made sure they knew there were issues. Shrug. They can't show everything.

That makes more sense to me than OP's suggestion that one of the TARDIS crew should do it, because which one? None of them are parents. Graham's experience was only as a step-grandad (at least until Aaron shows up two episodes later). The Doctor "has been a dad" but, you know, as much as I love her... For one thing kids need stability and that's something the Doctor knew someone local would have to provide if she didn't believe it of Erik.
