Wow. Really? "How dare you step foot in our precious female dominated thing."

Like... you're really going to go there like that's not what a lot of men think about women who try and dominate (atypically female) sports and STEM and shit?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no double standard here because power plus privilege etc etc.

Convenient, huh?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like there's probably a middle ground here of "try to be aware of the social context of things" idk

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean j* is literally the most successful beauty youtuber, he ranked 5th on that forbes list (and also a racist fuckwit but w/e) , i feel like there's some middle ground between that and "how dare you step foot here"

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay but if we're willing to accept (and encourage, like we should be) women dominating traditionally male things, why can we not accept and encourage men in traditionally feminine things? Like... the amount of jokes I still hear about men who care and look after their kids as 'babysitting' is fucking ridiculous, for example. No, they're being a good fucking parent, which shouldn't be seen as a feminine thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean, i'd consider making 18M a year pretty accepted and encouraged

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
to elaborate on my admittedly snippy comment, i thought it was pretty common knowledge that men in female dominated fields still get preferential treatment, so the flip really doesn't work.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Not in all female dominated fields though especially if it involves childcare.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
>especially if it involves childcare
Male teachers shoot up the ranks faster though

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
And female teachers can rape their students without any big consequences.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Aside from rightfully losing their jobs and being blacklisted from working with children? The only “it’s no big deal, he’s a lucky guy” bullshit reactions to female teachers raping their students that I’ve seen are from men. And not even most men, just the same kind of douches that say shit like “rape is just surprise sex, hurr hurr.”

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
They're often not, though. And those reactions don't just come from men.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, male nurses both make *more* money initially but are also promoted faster...so yeah. The flip doesn't work at all.

It's almost like one gender is preferred and given more power/money no matter WHAT they decide to do....

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
IA in principle, but it's not clear to me that we (as a society) actually do encourage and accept women dominating traditionally male things. People seem to have some pretty big issues about it. So I think there is something to be careful about, if this dynamic is only going one way.

To put it another way - we shouldn't make jokes about men looking after their kids but we shouldn't disproportionately socially reward it either.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
But (and AYRT basically made this comment too) men who do traditionally feminine things professionally tend to get paid more and given more prestigious positions than women. Look at fashion design, makeup/hair product companies, chefs—still male dominated.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Then we should be focusing on that fact, not gatekeeping types of jobs/interests from either sex, tbh.

Women are forced to wear make-up in business and socially. It is marked towards them. Science has no gendered marketing.

Anything women do daily is seen as unimportant but if men do it they get praised (cooking, childcare, knitting/crafts, etc). This is no different.
