I just figured women liked it for the same reasons they like slash. It removes them completely from the equation, so they don't have to compare themselves to another woman.

Also, I think lots of women enjoy the transgressive aspect of it.

I imagine those claiming it's "progressive" are just pushing back against those like OP who see it as some sort of affront to feminism/equality/etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this.

Also, it's not like these guys aren't good at what they do. I don't follow any of them, because the style of makeup they do tends to be way too showy and extra for my tastes. (I feel the same way about Jaclyn Hill's makeup, for the record. It's just too extra for me.) But they are good at it.

You got some messed up views of women if you think the majority of women like slash because of some competition with fictional women/internalized misogyny dog whistle logic.

God, men are so fucking dumb and don't know how to women.

No.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Really? "How dare you step foot in our precious female dominated thing."

Like... you're really going to go there like that's not what a lot of men think about women who try and dominate (atypically female) sports and STEM and shit?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no double standard here because power plus privilege etc etc.

Convenient, huh?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like there's probably a middle ground here of "try to be aware of the social context of things" idk

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
i mean j* is literally the most successful beauty youtuber, he ranked 5th on that forbes list (and also a racist fuckwit but w/e) , i feel like there's some middle ground between that and "how dare you step foot here"

Women are forced to wear make-up in business and socially. It is marked towards them. Science has no gendered marketing.

Anything women do daily is seen as unimportant but if men do it they get praised (cooking, childcare, knitting/crafts, etc). This is no different.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not into makeup youtube, but this sounds suspiciously like how back in the days of livejournal, simply showing up and being a dude in fandom could be enough to set you on track for BNF-dom.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-17 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Back in my day (~20 years ago on bboards). Fandom was still male dominated (at least it was in the sf fandoms I frequented) and being female made me stand out a hell of a lot more (I wasn't the biggest BNF, but I definitely had a notable name)

...really?
Most of the people I knew online (LJ and mailing lists) were really wary of anyone who was a dude/claimed to be a dude. Instant BNF-dom it was not.

I saw this happen in my fandoms before LJ was a thing, especially on mailing lists where a surprising number of people used academic/work email addresses to subscribe.

oh they are absolutely popular because they're hitting that gay-bff stereotype that a large number of women seem to adore, coupled with the fact that they're white as well because fuck knows MoC gurus don't even get half the attention their white-counterparts will.

wayne goss is the only male guru who's worthwhile since he's actually in the makeup industry and can actually do makeup. i don't think anyone in that secret is particularly talented.

miles jai is genderqueer (or nonbinary? don't remember for sure) and is the only male beautuber i personally like, entertaining videos with something other than 'person sitting in front of a camera'.

Ugh they all look so puffy and plastic.
Jeffrey doesn't even look human anymore.

Only beauty Youtuber I follow is Jenna Marbles and her Rachet Salon. Unless Safiya counts...

The only thing I take away from this is "well at least these dudes look just as dumb and tacky as their female counterparts".

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
God, I hate western makeup trends. The eye makeup is alright I guess (even if it's borderline clownish), but fuck, the 10 billions layers of face products caked on is just absurd. Moisturizer, primer, second primer, foundation, concealer, bronzer, powder foundation, cheek+nose contour, blush, then setting spray. My skin would be littered with acne if I did what these beauty gurus did.

Not to sound like a weab, but I wish the west would adopt eastern makeup where it's all subtle and simple.

My male cousin wears makeup, has since high school, is in his late 40s now, and as far as I know he is not gay. He and I never discussed that, but he always dated girls, married a woman and they seem happy as do their kids... I'm going to venture that while he's a flamboyant man, he is not feminine, nor are his best friends women. So.. maybe a guy like him if one did YouTube would not get the attention? Are there any? I don't wear makeup or watch YouTube so I don't know...
