Interesting. Back in my day (~20 years ago on bboards). Fandom was still male dominated (at least it was in the sf fandoms I frequented) and being female made me stand out a hell of a lot more (I wasn't the biggest BNF, but I definitely had a notable name)

I was also in fandom then, and it depended very much what fandom you were in whether it was majority male, majority female or 50/50. I was in some of each, but used a male pseud in the male-dominated fandom because I'm a lesbian and didn't want guys hitting on me.
