I'm not into makeup youtube, but this sounds suspiciously like how back in the days of livejournal, simply showing up and being a dude in fandom could be enough to set you on track for BNF-dom.

Interesting. Back in my day (~20 years ago on bboards). Fandom was still male dominated (at least it was in the sf fandoms I frequented) and being female made me stand out a hell of a lot more (I wasn't the biggest BNF, but I definitely had a notable name)

I was also in fandom then, and it depended very much what fandom you were in whether it was majority male, majority female or 50/50. I was in some of each, but used a male pseud in the male-dominated fandom because I'm a lesbian and didn't want guys hitting on me.

...really?
Most of the people I knew online (LJ and mailing lists) were really wary of anyone who was a dude/claimed to be a dude. Instant BNF-dom it was not.

I think the above statement could be altered to 'if you were a dude and wrote hot m/m slash fic', ala copperbadge in the Harry Potter fandom.

Ah ha ha, maybe. I was over the Harry Potter fandom by the time i 'met' Copperbadge....

I saw this happen in my fandoms before LJ was a thing, especially on mailing lists where a surprising number of people used academic/work email addresses to subscribe.
