Inspired by the music thread and the high school thread

Did you like the music that was popular when you were growing up?

I like the music that I was into when I was growing up. I'd say 50% of that was popular music of my generation.

No, I only listened to talk radio then. But I like it now lol

2000s teen here, FWIW.

Not really, but my problem was always that I was less of a band/artist followed and more of a one song wonder person as it was. I hated buying CDs back then, and was so glad when iTunes came out, specifically because I tended to only like a few songs on every album. So that alone made it hard to like popular music.

I did like most of Sheryl Crow's stuff, though. She was fairly popular, I think?

Some of it. At the time (mid 00s), I was mostly into the more alternative-y indie-y stuff, but that was still pretty popular in its own right. I do appreciate the rap more now, just because I've had time to sort out my own taste with rap and figure out what I do and don't like. And obviously there was a lot of music then that was just bad - I'll never apologize for hating Hoobastank or the Black Eyed Peas.

I... don't know? I mean, I am sure there was some stuff that was popular at the time that I enjoyed (the Offspring, BSB, etc), but I literally wore out my Miss Saigon and Carly Simon tapes in high school so...

Nope! My parents 1) were born in the '30s and 2) had me late in life so I grew up almost exclusively with music from the 40s and 50s, including when I was a teenager in the '90s. I never heard what people my age were supposedly listening to unless they were my ride, and... that was eye-opening... I kinda wanted to claw my ears out at times.

Definitely. I was all about whatever was getting played on MTV in the late '90s, loved all the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera/Backstreet Boys type and other top 40 music like that.

I'll listen to whatever, though, popular or not :).

I follow a "Top Hits of 1997" list on spotify *g*

I was really into Spice Girls, too. Beyond the catchy music, the Girl Power spoke to my little budding feminist.

Yes. My sister and i would listen to Casey Kasem's Top 40 on the radio and record our favorites; ABBA, Olivia Newton-John, the Bee Gees, Starland Vocal Band....

I liked the 'popular' music less as i got older, though there were always some bands - Cheap Trick, Rush, Queen - that I liked no matter what.

Absolutely! The pop of the 80s and early 90s was great. I haven't really enjoyed pop since then tbh.

I liked some of it. I didn’t appreciate what an excellent album No Strings Attached was until after it was dropped from airplay, though.

While everyone around me was stanning boygroups/the Spice Girls/other mid to late 90s music I had my massive musical fan phase. I think one of the main reasons was that we didn't have all the music video clip channels on TV and a lot of musicals were getting productions in my country during that time.

When I was nine I was mad at my mom because she wouldn't take me to see Miss Saigon. When I was twelve I got to see Joseph, thirteenth birthday gift was PotO, fourteen was Beauty and the Beast.

Finally got to see Miss Saigon when it came back in my twenties, my mom took me then. ;)

Sadly I haven't had a chance to see Jesus Christ Superstar ever but I have fond memories of lying on my dad's office floor at home listening to the record for that and Evita.

I’m not sure if it was popular since I got so much shit for liking it, but I absolutely loved My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At the Disco. Still love them actually and even went to see PATD this month.

I guess, but I didn't listen to the radio much because 1) I didn't have a car, 2) I couldn't afford to buy many tapes or CDs so I just enjoyed my parents' music, and 3) I went through a phase where I felt like enjoying music was a very private experience and would only do it with headphones on.

Well, it was the 1980's and music was better then (as opposed to now), so yeah.
