Really? I remember Harry/Hermione shippers accusing Ron/Hermione shippers of being stupid people who condone abusive relationships and acting all superior because their pairing was two functional people who respected each other. That was way before Twitter, so.

And I remember people calling me a pedophile for shipping Snarry instead of Draco/Harry.

I think there were also people calling Draco/Hermione fans sexist too iirc.

And I remember people calling Harry/Hermione shippers delusional. It went both ways.

But yes, I think the OP has on rose-colored glasses because the ship wars were just as bad back then.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The ones that insisted that Harry/Hermione was canon and that everyone else was just too stupid to see it were a little delusional. Not Snape wives delusional, though. Or "Ginny trapped Harry with love potions" delusional.

My point is, Harry Potter fandom's full of crazy.

Yeah, I'm still of the Play Nice School: I want to focus more on why A/B works than why A/C doesn't, and want to convert people to my ship by its own merits, not by trying to tear everything else down by saying the other ships are stupid or evil or w/e.

Seconding all of this. I'm in fandom to have fun and be happy, not dump on everyone's parade.

Isn't this a wider issue in that people are doing this with favourite characters in general? I really don't remember there being so much moralising about liking a certain character as though it impacts your real life morals in any way.

I mean there's always been people in fandom who hate X ship or Y character and will try to make you feel bad about it but I don't remember most of those people actively seeking out communities etc to hate read and harass the fans of said ship or character. Again, there were always those types (otherwise things like fandom wank would've had no material!) but it just seems to me that hate reading tags on Twitter, Tumblr is way worse now. That might be the nostalgia goggles or the fact my earlier fandom days are a good 15-18 years ago now so I don't remember clearly.

It's definitely worse now in the fact that it's so easy to tag people who enjoy a ship (or character) you don't like to sic your friends on them.

I don't see the point. I'd rather concentrate on what I like and ignore the bits I don't plus let the people who do like those parts get on with it in their own sandpit.

This is one reason why I don't engage with fandom on the whole. I go out of my way to make a few friends, but then I just stick to that group and have fun, rather than worry about all the politics.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like the rest of the Internet outside of fandom is devoid of politis...

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yes, but we're talking about fandom atm. I take a very similar approach to real life too, honestly, but I didn't think saying so really applied to the topic at hand.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I think you're wrong about the history - people have always made these kinds of arguments - but also I think you're wrong about what's going on now - I think that mostly people are using the moral trappings as ammunition in pre-existing shipwars, rather than vice versa. That's obviously still not a good thing but it's a slightly different phenomenon.

Nope, ship wars are just stupid.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
All of them, for any reason, unless you and whoever you're 'warring' with aren't serious about it and just having fun. (And I'm not talking about actual serious ideological problems with a certain ship, just ship wars.)

Fandom meta really needs to learn to punch up, as in even if BNF is completely wrong in their opinion, they still have 1% of the audience of the published work.

No ship-wars were always dumb and stupid and people absolutely used moral arguments for why certain ships were bad back in the day too. This 'people used to let people ship what they wanted without being judgy about it' is just flat-out wrong, because the judgement has always been there.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Man, you should have seen the old tirades of the NoRoMos back in the X-Files' heyday. Same old shit. I recall a whole lot of "Shippers must be okay with real-life incest because ___ said in ____ interview on ____ date that Mulder and Scully reminded them of siblings."

Trust me, none of this is new or unique.

Ye~ah... no. I remember the "Rukia is abusive to Ichigo, he needs to be with Hime, and if you don't agree you support DV" vs "Orihime is retarded, if Ichigo slept with her he'd be a RAPIST, and Kurosaki Ichigo is NOT a rapist"

No, fandom has ALWAYS used the social issues of the day to prop up their shit. Ship wars were always ugly with ugly attacks flying in every direction.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There always have been ship wars, but back then if a mod for your ship community saw wank, they'd delete it and everyone could move on. Now that there's all this purity culture and fandom is pretty much anything goes, well, it's made fandom pretty miserable.
