If it turns out Smollet staged the whole thing, then sadly, I do have to hope the repercussions are severe. But for me, it's not because I'm furious and I want Smollet to pay. It's because the repercussions for Smollet will then serve as a deterrent to others who might feel tempted to try something similar.

When it comes to Smollet himself, presuming he staged it all, I just mostly feel sad. Shame on him for crying wolf. But I don't believe he did it because he wanted attention. I suspect it was the homophobia and systemic racism he has witnessed and also experienced that motivated him.
His outrage and his desire to take action and have a real effect is very understandable. Unfortunately the action he choose to take was completely unsupportable, and the effect it will have is the opposite of what he intended.
