(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)I do think that people on the right, though, are being either a lot stupider or a lot more in bad faith than people on the left, in reacting to this. People on the left were maybe a little credulous about a story that always had some deeply iffy elements, but at the same time, if the police were taking it seriously and giving no indication of doubts, it's hard to blame them - and more importantly, they were correct about the general point (that racist and homophobic violence happens) and wrong about the particular facts. Whereas people on the right are wrong about the general principle, and crowing about how right they are about the specific facts, as though this somehow proves racist and homophobic violence doesn't exist. In other words, they're real dickheads, and anyone reacting like that is a dickhead, in addition to Smollet being a dickhead if he faked it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)I was at work when I first heard about this, and the dickhead beside me was positively crowing over it, scouring the internet for the most condemnatory "news coverage" he could find, describing the story to his buddies with details that, as far as I can tell, he'd either made up himself or his ultra-biased "news sources" had decided to infer. I mean this guy was absolutely relishing his in "righteous" outrage, and how he now got to feel vindicated in a bunch of his racist, liberal-hating opinions.
Hearing this asshat, I realized that even though what Smollet did was seriously fucking stupid and worthy of shame, I was more disgusted by these white, straight, conservative assholes' responses to the story than I was by what Smollet did.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 01:56 am (UTC)(link)I was at work too, and I had to make the point that even if this turned out to be all Jussie Smollett scheming, these kinds of things do happen to real people. Trans women are at risk particularly, etc.
And this shithead in my office is all, "Yeah, but it's mostly fakers. It always turns out to be faaaaake."
Fuck this. I'm so irritated by everything about this but particularly the reactions from the people like this.
