Obviously, what Smollet did was wrong and he is a dickhead as well.

But it's not like those people would have stopped being abusive bigots if it weren't for this. This is just another thing that they can mention when they're doing it.

I can tell I'm not making my point very well or something so I'm gonna bow out here because this whole situation is just way too close to home for me, but hopefully someone else gets what I'm trying to say. Have a good night.

I'm sorry if I'm not getting what you're trying to say!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like I get what you're trying to say-- it's not ABOUT being wrong/a dickhead, which all parties may well be, and it's not about hoping racists/homophobes might be less wrong/dickish, it's knowing that they're GOING to take this and use it as a weapon.

If this attack was faked, then someone who was already a racist/homophobe, who was never going to be anything other than a racist/homophobe, the discussion is not about that, but... When someone else is ACTUALLY beaten, the racists/homophobes will hold up this story and say 'oh, that's fake, this isn't a problem in society, shut up about it'.

And people who have never particularly thought about racism/homophobia will say 'oh, people fake being attacked?', and when someone is actually attacked, might question whether THIS attack was fake, pushing the window of acceptable responses to people being beaten towards the side of the racists/homophobes.

And people who are living their lives afraid of being beaten up on the basis of race/sexuality feel like they have fewer people they can trust, leading to isolation, leading to poorer mental health.

NAYRT, but yeah. It's like -- if a woman lies about being raped, that doesn't change the fact that women get raped all the time and it's horrible. What it does do is make it less likely that the cops and doctors and other authorities who responded to the false report are going to believe the next woman who tries to report a rape. It's going to create a more hostile environment for people who are already in a difficult situation because it gives ammunition to the assholes of the world, disillusions the baby idealists, and makes the fence-sitters wary of being taken for suckers.

When someone lies about stuff like this, it does not make them worse than the people who perpetrate these kinds of crimes. But it's more disappointing. You expect racists, homophobes, sexists, etc., to fuck you over. You don't expect to be stabbed in the back by someone who should be on your side.

anon from above

Yes, yes, this is also it. Thank you. Assholes have always been and will always be assholes, but this sort of stuff makes assholes out of fence-sitters. And that's really bad. Really, really bad.

ayrt

Yes, this is it exactly, thank you so much for putting it into better words. This is honestly too emotional an issue for me and I shouldn't have fought about it. It's just such an incredible step backward in the little progress we've managed to make.

No, I think you're making the point fine, but there is a rhetoric at play here.

I think you're saying there are dickheads and idiots who would use this to say "Look Gay black people are not really under threat". Then there are the majority of people who are not gay black people and do not see the realities of being gay and black, and can only go on what they are told. And if they are told "Look Gay black people are not really under threat" and they are presented with yet another hoax, they might be convinced.

Now my feeling is being tricked by a someone with anecdotal evidence into believing something that is not true does not make you a dickhead or an idiot, just someone who was tricked. But there is a rhetoric at play here like I said, where people respond to such a claim with "If you let yourself get tricked you are a dickhead and an idiot. It's all malice, and anyone who doesn't believe what I say is inherently bad and against me". So some people hold the view that there is only "My side and the bad side" and I think your view seems to be "There is my side, there is the bad side, and then there is the undecided masses, and this Jussie Smollett thing is a dangerous thing for the bad side to use against the masses"

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
The undecided masses are mostly people who don't want to admit whatever it is they've decided.

See that's what I mean, that sounds so much like "You're either with me or against me" rhetoric.

I am not down with it

(Anonymous) 2019-02-19 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The trouble is that sometimes it really do be like that

I don't know if I agree with that in general terms, but either way I really don't think this is one of those times.
