This is a frustrating attitude to me. Like, I totally get why The Discourse is frustrating and alienating and awful. And, yes, it's totally valid and good to shield yourself from the discourse and control the terms of your engagement with it.

But at the same time, one, the societal problems that we're talking about are always way bigger and more consequential than the problems with The Discourse are, and I think that's a really important reality to keep in mind. Two, I think the problems with The Discourse are less a result of outrage culture, and more a result of the way that media, the internet, society, and capitalism are structured. It's not like left critiques of societal problems is the only time when The Discourse gets toxic and cynical and stupid. The exact same patterns and problems turn up across totally different communities, different networks, different areas. Because they're structural problems.

So it almost seems myopic to me, one, to focus on the problems with The Discourse at the expense of the underlying societal problems, and two, to identify the problems with The Discourse as a specific result of leftist or liberal critiques of society. That doesn't mean that the discourse is good, or that you're morally required to engage with it in any particular way, but it seems like an attitude that's maybe lacking a sense of proportion.

I'm sorry if that's harsh - again, I think the points you're making are totally valid in themselves, I just don't think it should end there.

I agree completely with this post.

"Cynical" wouldn't be my choice of words. The purpose of the outrage machine seems to be complete dehumanization of the transgressor along with those who dare defend them in any way or even call such dehumanization into question. The outrage machine, in itself, has become a toxic societal norm. It is certainly not doing the left any favors.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Dehumanization is exactly the word for it.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
So, I understand your point. The thing is that I'm not sure how to balance that against the genuine desire for justice, especially in a society that often has no real mechanisms for justice. And the other thing is, there is just this massive swath of mechanisms that society already has for dehumanizing and ignoring people.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't know what the answer is. I'm just telling you what it's not.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if you genuinely think outrage is a tactic that belongs only to the left, or if you're just trolling, but either way you aren't doing yourself any favors here.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Of course outrage isn't limited to the left. I was speaking within the context of the secret - i.e. celebrity scandals that deserve nuanced discussion of genuine societal issues rather than mob pile-ons. If you missed that, I'd have to question either your intelligence or your candor, and either way, the accusations of trolling are getting old.

How can you not tell us which scandals you're referring to? There are so many.

The image is Shakespeare in Love so I presume it relates to Gwenyth Paltrow and/or Harvey Weinstein

Are you kidding? He didn't even write his own plays!

(Note: I am well aware that he did, in fact, write his own plays. Or at least that's what I think.)

I want to know what (16th/17th century? Modern?) societal problems Shakespeare's scandals are indicative of and also get some links to the outrage machine on the topic.
