Re: Democratic Nominees

I've got mixed feelings about this. While Sanders is in many ways an ideal candidate for me, I do think his running and more specifically his supporters were a factor in why Hillary didn't have the support she needed to defeat Trump, i.e. too many bitter Sanders supporters sitting at home and not voting. Much like a third party vote, I think his presence splits away crucial support from the more mainstream Democrat vote, and I absolutely do NOT want any Republican to win the election.

I can’t wait to blame bitter PUMAs for when Sanders loses the general in 2020.

I am... pretty skeptical of this narrative about the 2016 election - I don't think there's a ton of evidence to support it, and I don't think it's a necessary factor to explain why the election had the result it did.

That said, I also think that... I mean, those people exist whether or not Sanders is in the primary. They believe what they believe, regardless of whether or not Sanders is in the party. I don't think Sanders being in the primary is going to change that much wrt those voters. And divisiveness in the party is by no means a one-way street.

If only 12k of the 51k voters who voted for Jill Stein or 12k Democratic voters who had abstained in Michigan had voted for Clinton instead, then she would have won Michigan. I don't think it's a huge stretch to say that upset Bernie voters who abstained or voted third party could have possibly helped create a different outcome.

So, first, winning Michigan would not have been enough to win the election.

Second, it is - I think - difficult to really tease out the relationship between Sanders support, non-voting, and Stein voters. A lot of Stein voters are Stein voters because they're Stein voters. They're not just Democratic voters who are voting for Stein out of disillusionment. It's really hard to figure out what the magnitude actually is on left-leaning voters who sat out or voted for a third party.

Third, I think in general, framing it that way ignores a lot of the other factors in the campaign (including dumb things like the Comey letter) and the mistakes that Hillary made it to let it get to that situation, in terms of things like messaging and campaign strategy. And I think the immediate cause of Hillary losing was that she lost suburban swing voters in those 3 key rust-belt states over the very last week of the election.

I'm well aware. It was just one factor in many.

If the Michigan thing doesn't help, how about that 12% of people who voted for Bernie in the primary voted for Trump instead of Clinton? Which isn't "really hard to figure out" but actually polled for.

I am well aware of all of those factors. There were so many. But the thing is, the margin was small enough that while if some of those factors had gone a different way the result could have been different, the same is true about the Bernie supporters not supporting Clinton. I absolutely believe that if they hadn't been as bitter (seriously, 12% voted for Trump?) that the outcome would have been different, even if other factors had remained the same.
