Reylo? I'm guessing it's Reylo.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Kylux

I haven't heard Kylux called racist. Reylo gets called racist since Kylo isn't Finn.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard kylux called racist because "oooohh gotta be all about White Boy Cock" - ie if you were a non-racist slasher you'd be a good FinnPoe shipper instead

If it’s Reylo I’m very disappointed that OP didn’t use the sand picture.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Reylo, racist? What the hell is wrong with people.

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-02-21 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Because if you ship Rey with Kylo rather than Finn you are racist? At least, that's the accusation I've heard. ridiculous, though.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Does the image relate? I’m over here trying to figure out what pairing a pineapple fountain could represent...

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Spongebob/Patrick is secretly racist.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Starfish are routinely oppressed and kitchen sponges are historically their greatest oppressors. Cleaning utensils literally took quintapeds as sex slaves as recently as twenty years ago. The implication, especially when the starfish is portrayed stereotypically as a clueless moron, just makes the whole thing really squicky to anyone who knows anything about undersea culture.

...Rokudo Mukuro / Doukro Chrome? Except I can't see where someone would call that racist.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I had to open the secret again to see where you could possibly gotten those two from, and then I saw it and ugly laughed

Maybe Shassie?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The show Psych had a thing with pineapples. And, apparently, if you don't ship Gus/Shawn, you're maybe racist.

Re: Maybe Shassie?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
that makes more sense than the two SW m/m ships mentioned above, which don't really have non-white alternatives.

It doesn't make you racist but there is a clear pattern, historically, in fandom, with ships involving black characters being less popular. And Shawn/Gus is an example of that.

Is Charleston a pairing?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I thought maybe Psych?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
SA - not the only one I see. Note to self: read all comments before posting.

I couldn't do pairings in psych. I just loved the friendship dynamic and don't think it's racist not to pair the main characters. I mean wider world dynamics, etc, all valid, but to me it would feel wrong for pushy Sean to be with Gus.

Their dynamic that works for me as childhood friends would feel icky as lovers. I know that it wouldn't to many. Ymmv.

But shassie is standard enemies to lovers pretty much paint by numbers--not complicated to see its popularity. But I didn't really ship that either

Would it really be all that different from, for example, House/Wilson?

I mean, I can definitely see Shassie as well, I think Shassie is a great ship. And people shipping Shassie definitely aren't being racist. But there is a pattern to look at.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's always good to look at wider patterns. I'm not sure if I could ship house and Wilson either...but I'm sure people do.

Tbh I'm usually on the gen end, and I hate power imbalances in ships or where one character is a jerk.

My feelings is that most viewers of psych when it aired were teens, and fairly happy with the Canon het relationship. But older viewers sought out ship dynamics like friends to lovers like old comfy socks.

Always worth examining racist undercurrents so we can work on em. But it can go pretty far once you start: Stormpilot had a lot of criticism for any hints of Latin Lover tropes, or Sexy Black Man, which made it a little hard to attract sexy writing at all after awhile. Lots of gifs, but not a lot of people ready to risk the gauntlet

There are patterns. But also, the specific fandom and the ship type does make a difference. I don't know anything about Psych. But for the above Star Wars example, people are almost always more likely to ship enemies/rivals than they are friends. Rey and Finn are friends. Rey and Kylo are enemies. Kylo is the fandom darling. Kylo is a villain who people seem to find it easy to woobify. This is a ship type that is generally really popular.

I haven't kept up with the fandom... back when I was involved, it was all shassi all the time, I guess it's fallen out of favor.

(I did ship Shawn and Gus and was always disappointed that there was nothing for them then, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth if it's become the accepted pairing because of virtue signalling rather than on its own merits...)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain, OP. My number one OTP since 2012 has been Johnlock - not exactly a beloved pairing in these parts. (except to me!)
