The Umbrella Academy

I know there was a thread on this a few days ago but I just finished it last night - what do people think? I loved it and am already thinking of fanfic I could write, but I want to know what everyone else thought!

I'm almost halfway through but really enjoying it!

Just finished episode 3. The plot isn't that interesting so far but the vibe is pleasant and the cast is good.

Imo the plot is okay but it’s really more of a character driven story. Like, the real plot is about the family and their trauma -which is how I like my stories personally.

nayrt - This. I think they've chosen their cast pretty well, so it's working for me based on characters and their interactions alone.

I liked it much more than the comic books and I really hope it gets a second season. I loved Vanya’s transformation into the White Violin. She looked cool as hell and her outfit was way better than the one she wore in the comic. I can’t decide if she’s my fave or Klaus.

Agree, I think the show was able to give the ideas room to breathe that the comics never did and made the characters more sympathetic without losing their core. And Vanya’s transformation was sooooo good.

I definitely agree with you on the show making the characters more sympathetic. I didn’t really connect to any of them when I read the comics with the exception of Vanya. I grew to care for all of them as I watched the show. I’m also glad that we got to see Ben’s powers in action with Klaus’s help.

It is very much like the comic, or really different as far as plot, etc., go?

Re: Spoilers

Nayrt but it’s pretty different in most ways, but still feels like an adaptation that is faithful to the ideas of the comic if not the details, of that makes sense? Hazel and Cha Cha are probably the most different overall.

No, that makes sense. Thanks!

I've only watched one episode. It didn't really hook me in but I will give it another try.

I really enjoyed it except.... Vanya's sad panda-ness really got on my nerves by the end, and I stopped caring.

I could watch Klaus (and Ben, and the Klaus and Ben show) all damn day. It was pretty neat, different, pretty to watch. I'd recommend it, for sure.

See I honestly though Vanya would start grating on me, so I was surprised when she didn't. I guess because if I found out I'd been lied to for like, 26 years and drugged for also 26 years, I'd have a pretty good reason to feel betrayed.

And she should have felt betrayed. But not by people who didn't actually *know* it had happened (and were horrified), and not by every random human she was about to kill.

I completely understand her rage, betrayal, hurt, horror, grief. But you don't *kill the whole world* because of it, unless the whole world had a hand in it, which it didn't.

Just me, maybe, but i detest that trope.

Tbf she has her “kill everyone” break after being locked in a soundless solitary confinement room, and it’s definitely portrayed more as a complete break with sanity than logic

It's true. And OMG, i was so angry with Luther for a) not listening and b) insisting she be locked up and then *furious* at everyone else who *knew* it was a shitty idea but didn't challenge him and/or sneak back and let her out.
ARGH.

She still irritated me, but yeah - she wouldn't have had that psychotic break if Luther hadn't been such a tool about it.

I'm getting close to the end, for me the plot isn't anything super amazing but the characters are keeping me around, especially Klaus, Hazel+Cha Cha(and I want mooooooore Ben+Klaus explanation show, gimmie!), Diego has his moments where I like him too and I'm oddly fond of the mother? Idk, it's fun and I really like the whole time-travelling assassains concept, it's neat.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-21 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I loved it. It's honestly been ages (like since they first printed them) since I read any of the comics, and I never finished cause... money lol.

But I don't mind that the plot is sort of secondary? Like, the way I felt watching it was that it was more of a device for you to get to know the characters/their issues as a family, etc.

I am all here for the BenKlaus(Diego) show though. Gimme some fic.
