inspired by 5 - Do you get beta offers from strangers?

Do you accept them? I can't really imagine accepting for the same reasons the OP of the secret listed. Working with someone like that requires more knowledge of that person and their abilities, IMO. I have regular betas, and they're my regulars for a reason.

No, but many years ago (I'm talking 2002) I offered to beta an author's fic. She politely declined, but we ended up becoming close fandom friends for several years.

I’ve never actually gotten a beta offer.

Only when I'm looking for a beta for a fic in a fandom I don't usually write and neither of my go-to betas are familiar with. I don't think I've ever had an unsolicited beta offer.

Back when I was writing a lot for one fandom, I got some every now and then.

But they were very clear they were offering because they liked my fic and just wanted to read more fic earlier.

I mean... it's nice they were honest, but that would annoy me a little. It seems rude to offer like that when it's not really an offer, it's trying to get something out of you.

They were only semi serious, though I think they would have done it if I took them up on it. None of them were really expecting anything to happen, which took the pressure off.

Eghhh. I don't really like it when people are trying it on. You know... "joking" about something because if they call it a joke, they don't have to be responsible for the fact that it's a presumptuous, self-interested request. It lets people make a play for something with a thin veneer of facetiousness as plausible deniability. Oh, you mad? They weren't serious, haha!

And it works, because you bought it.

I used to be a BNF in a popular anime fandom and I'd get offers. I also got requests to translate my fics and even do fanart of them. It was all very flattering. I never used a beta though, I guess I never felt so serious about it that I felt the need to collaborate with anyone on that, let alone a random person.

Strangers make awkward betas, IMO. I haven't been happy working with random people I didn't know in the fandom. I stopped seeking out betas and I didn't get a lot of random offers after that.

The only time I got a beta offer from a stranger it had terrible spelling and punctuation, so I didn't accept that. But I usually post very short stuff and usually don't use a beta.

I'm not a BNF and I'm pretty good at SPAG and editing my stuff, so I've never gotten any beta offers. In my main fandom, I've got a friend (who is horrible at SPAG but knows the canon backwards and forwards) who gives me a quick read-through to catch any canon errors or plot holes.

The one time I did work with a formal beta, they were matched with me as part of a Big Bang I was working on, and they were horrible. They didn't like the Oxford comma and constantly pointed that out as an "error," and there were some equally odd grammar "rules" that they said I was violating and I should fix, including in the dialogue. Plus they clearly didn't "get" what I was trying to do with the story, and kept making changes that would be more in line with their own vision of it.

Nowadays, if someone asks me if I have a beta, I lie and say yes.
