I also fail, apparently.

The name of Alphonse Elric in Japanese is a play of language regarding the nature of the character. In Japanese, his nickname is adapted into the katakana "Aru" to mimic the pronunciation of "Al," but the hiragana "aru" (pronounced exactly the same) is a verb meaning "to exist." The Japanese, however, have two verbs for "to exist;" one for animate objects (iru) and one for inanimate objects (aru). Since a major theme of the anime is whether or not Alphonse still exists as a person with his soul affixed to the normally-inanimate suit of armor, the choice of naming him takes on a deeper meaning with this background. This wordplay could in fact be only a coincidence and not an intentional decision, but it serves as an interesting look into the nature of the language nonetheless given the theme of Al's struggle to define what he has become.

8)

Of course, that doesn't mean those writing his name in English should be using a Japanese word, especially if they don't know what the fuck they're actually referring to. I use "Al" because they are speaking an Indo-European language, and therefore the Japanese wordplay has no meaning. It'd be like calling Al "Exists" or something to that extent. The wordplay simply doesn't transfer in English, and therefore his English name should be used.

Not!Fandom is indeed fandom -- those two are in Radiohead.

102. Perhaps you nurture some hope that two great fails will somehow cancel each other out, creating a form of win?

103. Man, what episode is THAT speech from? I have no memory of ever hearing it before, to be honest.

117. ... I have no idea what that is, but consider me mightily intrigued. What's the story here?

127. Though I agree (when she's in grown up form, mind), I find it hard to believe that you have not found any yet. This is, after all, the Internet.

135. Yet another example of a cover becoming more famous than the original. If ID did take inspiration from that book of course, there's the possibility they didn't but I think it's funnier if they did.

152. Has any One Piece fan ever commented on that habit?

169. Wow. That... looks almost as bad as what he's REALLY going to look like.

175. Oho? Please to be telling the rest of us, or giving a link to where info can be had?

ESPECIALLY IF PRUNESQUALLOR IS JOHN SESSIONS Y/Y?

Me too...that's actually a really good idea...

cheers

Oh man, why did you put that idea in my head? Now I want to see it, too!

163. Seconded on the Resident Evil 4 front. My god, I know those books are dubious crack but I love them. Between me and a friend I think we have the whole series.

I'm a Steve/Claire shipper and a lot of it is because I read the book before coming to the game. Perry actually made Steve more sympathetic, gave him depth and made him more than the teen with the annoying voice. ^_^

176: Fuck 'em. Don't worry about what other people think. If you fall for someone go for it, don't give up an opportunity due to paranoia that other people might not believe you. I'm not speaking from experience, but still: I couldn't leave the post without encouraging you to do things that are right for you, rather the image you have with everyone else. Good luck.

103) OH MAN. This secret just made my afternoon. <3

What is that?

176

[identity profile] mirwolf.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I know coming out is very difficult - I can't even think of a REASON I'm terrified of my family knowing but I still can't bring myself to say it anyway - but you shouldn't be discouraged from being who you are because some morons wanna jump the gay-bandwagon. We need real lesbians to defend the 'WE ACTUALLY LIKE SEX WITH WOMEN' fort yanno~ |D

And besides, there can't be THAT many fake lesbians out there.

156

me too... ;)

[identity profile] element-43.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
...oh, man. That would be the best movie ever.

[identity profile] fabula-umbrae.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
176. Talk to people and be honest. Also, where are these "fandom lesbians"? I've run into goth girls at parties pretending to be bi to pick up guys... but I don't think I've ever met anyone at a convention or online pretending to be a lesbian to be cool. Especially since this is a culture where it's not particularly edgy. Then again I have seen a lot of cosplayers doing the whole posing thing to get attention... *shrugs*

Your friends will understand. Also, it'll feel a lot better to not be hiding all the time. I'm sure people will be able to see the difference. Which will only add to the understanding about your prior situation.

Whenever I see one of these secrets I always wonder if it's someone I know. It's highly unlikely especially in this case, since I know very few people raised in Catholic homes. I can honestly say though, if you are someone I know, I'd take it in stride.

142: I liked Orson Wells as Rochester myself, but yes, the 1983 IS the best version all around.

157: Ikkaku is sex anyway.. yum.

168: Oh.. oh dear, I'm sorry. The first thing I thought when I heard he was playing Light was, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! WHY YOU DO THIS HOLLYWOOD?!" But admittedly, it's not as bad as Keanu Reeves playing SPIKE SPIEGAL, WTF..

Yes. YES. Dwight/Angela is the best Office pairing - way better than Jim/Pam.

154. I had to stop playing some games for a while because it hurt too much because those worlds, those adventures are fictional. So.. I feel you, OP.

I think you're right that the writers did it on purpose, not because they really meant for them to be a couple, but because cozy domestic habits between mad scientist and igor are funny. So I guess you could say they're about as canon as anything is on MST3K.

[identity profile] cynical-fluff.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
123 - I prefer the old school silly Batman movies to the new ones. The whole ninja!Batman thing isn't for me.

151 - When I was in sixth grade (and this was a while ago) I used to battle my homeroom teacher and we would swap Pokemon because she was the only person I knew who had a copy of Red. I never understood why EVERYONE had Blue.
