113 I stopped taking the second season seriously after episode 7 with emo!Lelouch. I just enjoy it for all it's train wreck-y worthy. 8)

145 ARGH, ok, so I get that Aru is a Japanese play on words with the "To live/exist" thing, and thus has some merit as Alphonse's name, but Edo? WTF that bugs me to no end. I can't stand the whole Edo/Aru thing. They may be from an alternate universe, but it's pretty clear in the series that they speak ENGLISH, if not some other form of Indo-European languge.

Al's nickname is clearly a short form of Alphonse, so how the hell do you get "Aru" out of that. </rant>

Aru is how they say Al in Japanese. I. Really think that's the extent/reason for it. Nothing more, nothing less. Same with Edo. It's not supposed to make sense, it's just fanbrats trying to show off their vast Japanese knoweldge in a place where vast Japanese knoweldge really doesn't make a difference or have any effect. Since they wouldn't be speaking Japanese. B|

The name of Alphonse Elric in Japanese is a play of language regarding the nature of the character. In Japanese, his nickname is adapted into the katakana "Aru" to mimic the pronunciation of "Al," but the hiragana "aru" (pronounced exactly the same) is a verb meaning "to exist." The Japanese, however, have two verbs for "to exist;" one for animate objects (iru) and one for inanimate objects (aru). Since a major theme of the anime is whether or not Alphonse still exists as a person with his soul affixed to the normally-inanimate suit of armor, the choice of naming him takes on a deeper meaning with this background. This wordplay could in fact be only a coincidence and not an intentional decision, but it serves as an interesting look into the nature of the language nonetheless given the theme of Al's struggle to define what he has become.

8)

Of course, that doesn't mean those writing his name in English should be using a Japanese word, especially if they don't know what the fuck they're actually referring to. I use "Al" because they are speaking an Indo-European language, and therefore the Japanese wordplay has no meaning. It'd be like calling Al "Exists" or something to that extent. The wordplay simply doesn't transfer in English, and therefore his English name should be used.

No, no, you misunderstand. I know that it's a word play, but I think the reason that the English fandom uses it is based solely on the fact that Al's name in Japanese is spoken as Aru. Before you told me about that, I never knew it was a play on words, and I'm not sure a lot of fans would off-handedly know that either.

That's what I'm saying: Most of the people who use it do so without knowledge of the play on words. It's annoying to no end, and even as someone who knows next to nothing about the Japanese language aside fangirlish crap, it bothers me that people don't take the time to learn more about the background behind a character's name. That's exactly why I don't use it, in hopes that people get the idea that it should AL and not ARU. :\

That's what hacks me off the most. IT'S SHORT FOR ALPHONSE AND EDWARD. NO 'ARU', NO 'EDO'. Ed's named for Edward Scissorhands, for Christ's sake. *despair*
