Sure, why not. lol His betrayal felt so hamfisted and a convenient way to write him off, so it'd be nice if he had the chance to recover a bit of depth.

Disney movies are not the most nuanced of films so I think his betrayal was played out just fine? It was a nice twist on the 'magical uwu prince is instant true love' trope Disney is famous for.

Write...what off? He was only there TO betray her.

right? like... characters aren't real people. they're created to fulfill a function and Hans was to look like a Classic Disney Prince and then betray her. That's what he was made to do, lol

Dude, hard disagree. A character can be fleshed out and humanized. If your character is only there to fulfill a function, your story sucks.

not necessarily

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
WTF?

All characters are literally there to fulfill some narrative function in whatever story they're part of. Part of the skill of writing is making them look like actual human beings with depth.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
That's absolutely *not* the case. Characters are not required to first and foremost be narrative functions, and any humanization is bonus. A story can be built the other way around, and sometimes, characters are just people and not literary tools. If you are interested in a story about people, a character who exists only as a walking betrayal is obnoxious as fuck. They can be humans first and foremost.

I didn't say that humanization was "bonus." It's a very necessary skill. Characters need to act like believable people.

But characters aren't people.

Everything in a story is there for the benefit of the story. Characters who don't serve the narrative in some way weaken the story as a whole.

Exactly. He wasn't a real character. And there was no real indication that he was going to betray her prior to it happening, except in that he clearly wasn't going to end up her one true love. Rather than having Anna choose, the competition is "written off" so the choice is made for her.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Except if that was the case, wouldn't have whatshisname been the one to unfreeze her and not Elsa? Like, you're saying that Hans was written off so that she is paired with the only other male in the movie, but even at the end they're not really 'paired' in a Disney HEA sort of way, and Elsa and Anna's relationship is still the more important thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
DA But he wasn't "written off"; his plot was just how he was written. That's all there is to him.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-22 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT, sorry, that was my point to the other anon, that if he was supposedly written off to support AnnaSven(?), then the movie would have ended with AnnaSven and not Anna & Elsa familial love. His sole purpose was to betray Anna and he did.

We have no evidence he is ever a decent person. He wasn't an okay guy who suddenly decided to go bad, but a bad guy who was pretending to be nice and hoping for some opportunity all along. His betrayal wasn't hamfisted, it was just him showing who he really is.
