I was a Mulder/Krycek/Scully OT3r from the beginning of my hardcore X Files fandom (starting around 2001-2002,) but the longer I've gpne on, the less and less I've been able to tolerate Mulder, to the point of totally buying the "Mulder was always delusional, the X Files division was created to contain him and his delusions, and Scully and Krycek were both assigned as his handlers at different points, and he worked them into his personal mythos" theory, as stated on CRACKED: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL5s5nwvTt4

I've always liked Doggett, and found him to be a welcome change from Mulder's histrionics. For years it felt like I was the only one who did. And I totally understand shipping with with Scully (and even read a few good fics to that end back in the day.)

I feel like the people who got into it late in the game, when Doggett first came in, or shortly after, had a fundamentally different experience of the show. Literally like seeing a mountain from the other side, or something.

I got into TXF early on in the show's run, and by the time Doggett was brought in, the show had gone into decline, and to me it barely felt like itself anymore. And while Doggett is a perfectly serviceable character in his own right, I find it hard not to view him as The Face Of The Show's Decline - especially since I will always find it frustrating as fuck that the execs apparently just couldn't let Scully run the show and take over for both of them for half a season. In the words of Ellen Pompeo, "I couldn't believe how fast they felt they needed to get a dick in there."

Call me a purist, the term rather fits. It's nothing against Scully/Doggett shippers, though. It's just...the other side of the mountain.

I watched from the very beginning and the only thing I remember about Doggett was that I hated his voice. HATED IT. So much so that it distracted me from everything else about his character.

I don't find his voice that irritating on anything else so I have no idea what was going on there.

I probably came off a little harsh about Mulder: I kind of see him as The Face Of Conspiracy Theory Culture now, something I've gone off on in both my DW and on Twitter.

I was a casual fan of X Files since the first season, but my hardcore fandom (fic writing, posting to forums, etc) amped up right around the time that the show was winding down. And yes, I remember the mutterings of "who is this guy?" When Doggett showed up (and also, "Why don't they just let Scully carry the show?") But I liked Doggett and even Reyes as characters and would have watched additional seasons with them.

But it's hard for me to watch the show at all now, when Qanon True Believers are threatening actual violence, and conspiracy theory culture has dragged the discourse so far down.
