I agree. I have more issues with this movie now than I used to (I don't think the whole Westley slapping Buttercup even read as okay when the movie was made). But it is still just so fun to watch. And his performance is great. Though I think Mandy Patinkin and Chris Sarandon are the best parts of this movie.

I don't remember Westley slapping Buttercup.

There's the scene where he slaps her and then says there are consequences when a woman lies.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I remember that scene, but he didn't slap her.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I thought he only raises his hand and she flinches away in the movie?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're mistaken. He draws back a hand, but never actually slaps her.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably because it didn't happen.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
It did in the book, I thought he only raises his hand and she flinches away in the movie

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't recall what the book does, but since the discussion is about the movie specifically, I'm not sure it's relevant.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta say, any film with Mandy called as a highlight must be pretty fucking shitty...

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Chris Sarandon/Prince Humperdinck still is in my top 5 movie characters OF ALL TIME.

But yes, OP, I agree here too.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Mandy Patinkin's, maybe.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, make your own secret.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
His performance in the Jungle Book was way better, in my opinion. He made such an amazing villain!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
He was also the only actually good part of the terrible Ella Enchanted movie. Which is hilarious considering his character was created for the movie. But he was hamming it up so delightfully.

Individual performances I am not sure but I am still irritated that the whole thing didn't get big awards.

I am also still annoyed that the DVD versions didn't have the original game that came in the vhs version. Wee mini board game thing :D

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, how on earth did it not even get nominated for Adapted Screenplay?

That's just incorrect. SMH @ the Academy.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Inconceivable!

Imho it's one of the few cases of the film being better than the book - if that ain't some top notch adapting, what is?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Nah

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
funny old world if we were all the same

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
As much as I love the actor- screw this movie.
Seriously. It took me forever just to watch it, and even then I was just. so. unimpressed... Like people talk about it like it's revolutionary, but it's just the same bullshit all the other low-tier late 80/90's movies tossed out. You might as well give Cherry 2000 a Nobel Peace Prize, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-23 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably had to live through the late 80s to enjoy it.

And if you didn't, you kinda have to hate it on principle.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I was born in the late 80's and don't remember anything before the 90's, and I ADORE this movie.

I only came back to check this thread...

... to see if philstar admitted she was wrong about her recollection of what happened, LOL. Wasn't surprised she didn't, though.
