Do you mean erotica written in historical times, or erotica in historical settings?

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Both! I like stuff actually written in the 18th/19th centuries, but my main issue with it is the ridiculous amount of incest which is there for some reason. I don't know wtf that was all about, but it definitely seems like a major kink of the time and it just... squicks a bit...

I'm with you, OP. Either interpretation of this secret. I like escapism in my erotica. I'll accept a lot more and read a lot more in erotica set in different time periods (or in fantasy/scifi worlds) than I am willing to accept in something set in the modern world.

I would love that if it had decent production values, like something remotely resembling bordering on kind of sort of historically accurate costumes, hair, makeup, sets, and props. I can't imagine anyone bothering, though.

Basically we want Pride and Prejudice (2005) but with fucking. Is that too much to ask??

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a UK adaptation of Fanny Hill https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0085602

Not on Amazon but might be around somewhere?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell a lie, it is on Amazon

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I'd forgotten about that! Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The closest you might get is a dramatization of Moll Flanders, or perhaps the Harlots series?

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've yet to find a good recording quality of Moll Flanders, alas.

I love Harlots! But the sex scenes in it are not quite what I'm after, as most of them are very much "this is work" vibes which works brilliantly in the show but doesn't rip my bodice.

I really want this too! I mean oh gosh, it would be like complete costume porn on top of regular porn. Like I am just imagining all of the scenarious-- and women read historical romance because men in cravats, imagining like the sexy removal of all the articles of clothing, in such a fun historical romp...

YES PLEASE!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
hey op.... you got any reccs? i'm a sucker for historical erotica!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I like Jess Michaels. She does M/F historical erotica.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
For M/M Jordan L Hawk has a lot of variety time-period-wise and is really good.
I've yet to find a F/F author who does it for me tbh.
And of course a lot of fic.
For something silly and light hearted, I recently read "My Lady's Choosing", a regency romance choose your own adventure which is HILARIOUS

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
(Meant to say, OP here!)

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
(Also meant KJ Charles instead of Jordan L Hawk (who is still good but more fantasy-aligned))

Do I have a rec for you!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you're OK with incest, blood, murder, blasphemy, death, and masturbating with a cucumber I recommend the movie Immoral Tales.

It has the most amazing costumes and set pieces. Seriously.

OP here: Ahh, thank you! I've read enough of-the-time erotica to have been completely inured to the bizarrely common incest thing.

I do love how, despite being historical, the hair is so seventies.

There are some movies that aren't porn, but might be of interest.

Haunted Summer (1988) - In 1815, authors Lord Byron, Mary Shelley and Percy Shelley get together for some philosophical discussions, but the situation soon deteriorates into mind games, drugs and sex.

Impromptu (1991) - In 1830s France, pianist/composer Frédéric Chopin is pursued romantically by the determined, individualistic woman who uses the name George Sand.

The Favourite (2018) - In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.

Re: There are some movies that aren't porn, but might be of interest.

OP: Thanks so much, I'll look into them!
(Currently incredibly annoyed at myself for not getting round to seeing The Favourite yet)

Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) made a number of erotic prints and woodcuts. Years ago I saw a book reproducing them.

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Rowlandson's prints - they straddle the line between grotesque, hilarious and titillating so well!

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
They're not movies, but Jess Fink has put out some erotic comics with historical settings. I like her style :)

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-02-26 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I had a quick google, and I just have to say damn, she is absolutely gorgeous. I will also check out the comics.
