Well, Penny WAS just a plot device...she could have been anything from a rare animal to a case of Wonderflonium, so long as both Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer wanted the item.

Honestly, in my experience, the people that were offended by Dr. Horrible are the same people that are offended by EVERYTHING. They search for offense.

Seeing as how every character but Billy was a plot device, I don't see why Penny being a plot device is such an OMGEVILBAD thing. If she was badly written, sure, but she had interests outside Captain Hammer and Billy, and she walked away in the last episode when Hammer was doing his speechsong, so it's not like she was written as some brainless twit. For a minor character in something that only lasted 45 minutes, she's not bad at all.

This is... this is plot, though. D: This is plot. This is- why is it a bad thing? Two-boys-both-like-girl-fight-over-girl (or vice-versa) is one of the main romance plots, along with boy-likes-girl-boy-loses-girl-to-something-else-boy-gets-girl-back (or not) (and vice versa) and wow-there's-so-much-UST-hate-turns-into-love.

More than that, two characters struggling over something is interesting. No matter WHAT it is, person or item. That is where tension comes from- a character either struggling with another character, with themselves, or with fate/the elements. This is one of the first things writers learn.

The show was interesting because it had those characters- Penny, being a plot device or not, was interesting, and her interactions with Captain Hammer and Billy were as interesting as their interactions with each other. The story would not have been the same if they'd both wanted to... I don't know, adopt a kitten or something. Though I admit, that would have been hilarious.

Here's what bugged me.. Even after being shocked by Capt. Hammer's "Oh, yeah I did her" crap, and seeming to realize what a jerk he is, when she's dying, what does she say? "Capt. Hammer will save us!" And it feels like the reason they had her say that was to twist the knife... But, why not have her blame Billy for what happened. Surely having the woman you love blame you (rightfully, I might add) for her death would be a pretty big blow, right?

Because that would be out of character for Penny, I figured--not to mention, she was probably delirious/in shock. I'm pretty sure I would be if I had shrapnel embedded in my chest. XD

I really don't think it was Dr. Horrible's fault she died. It was Hammer's for not listening to the warning or noticing that the ray was sparking and sizzling.

I can see why you'd be bothered though. Here's the thing though, if she had started blaming Billy as she was dying, he could have later rationalized (out of desperation) that she chose to be his enemy. Since her dying words were only concerned with him and comforting him, he can never have that illusion that might make it easier for him to throw himself into evil.

Oh man, I hope that makes some sense. D:
