147 OP
(Anonymous) 2008-09-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)You think I haven't been told this a gazillion times? Did Boromir try to take the ring? Yes. Did he deserve to die for that? Yes, probably. Do I think that if in that one particular scene that if Frodo had acted differently then none of that would have happened? Yes I do.
I know the ring sets up scenarios and such, but I just get so frustrated when my friends paint him so black when I see him more as a tragic hero than the antagonist.
Re: 147 OP
I wonder, though, are you sympathizing with book!Boromir, or movie!Boromir? I'm curious about what scene it is that you're referring to.
Re: 147 OP
(Anonymous) 2008-09-11 06:06 am (UTC)(link)I think I phrased that incorrectly. I don't think he deserved to die, per se, but I do think that any human who gets involved with the ring does die, so he was doomed as soon as he attempted to take it.
Yeah, totally tragic hero in my eyes. Good guy, fatal flaw? Oh man, all those extended scenes with his brother really choke me up.
Re: 147 OP
I'm not sure that that's strictly true- it did happen, but it's not necessarily the rule. If Isildur had kept the ring a secret and stayed in his city, I don't think that he would necessarily have died prematurely. That's a bit off-topic, though. It's been a really long time since I shared theories about LotR, so forgive my rambling!
...It sounds as though you're just dealing with people who only see the outside appearance of things without putting more thought into it. Did they not read the books or see the extended edition, maybe? In the original release, a lot of Boromir's development was cut- enough, I think, that you could easily miss out on the side of him that is more than just, 'Grar I'm evil need power.'
Re: 147 OP
(Anonymous) 2008-09-11 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)They're basically under the impression that if Faramir and Aragorn could resist the ring, that Boromir must have been essentially evil for the ring to have such a hold over him. Bah.
And I'll give you the Frodo point. I guess he just didn't seem so... pathetic in the book as he does in the movie, but that's more of a portrayal than the actual character.
Oh, please, ramble away. As I've stated, my friends are idiots, and it seems like only online (and with my dad) can I have an intellectual conversation about LotR.
