Magnolia + Aimee Mann's over of "One is the Loneliest Number".... WOW

I was just thinking about it the other day, in fact. About how disorienting that whole initial sequence is, and how the tension and dissonance builds to an almost unbearable point, and then BAM. That simple little piano riff kicks in, and you know from that point on that every single relationship in the film is doomed, and you're going to be off-kilter the whole film.

I love that the director basically just went to Aimee Mann and was like, "Can your music be the soundtrack to my film?" Mann has such a distinctive voice, and IMO it worked really well with the tone of the movie. It a good movie, but I don't think it would be nearly as memorable without her music.
