The fact that so few fanfics have a Gay couple do something like, say, adopt or have a child via a surrogate mother, also feels reflective of another toxic meme: adopted children don’t qualify as real kids. Unless one parent donated the necessary semen and the other gestated the baby, they don’t qualify as real parents, regardless of how much of a formative influence they had on their child.

OK, I've read a TON of fics where gay couples adopt or wind up rearing a child together by all sorts of magical fantasy ways that don't exist in the real world, and some that do (taking on a dead family member's child, etc)

But you are REALLY missing the point of fantasy/SF worldbuilding. You're stuck in the real world where a sperm and an egg are needed to make a baby (and those have to come from men and women) and the baby has to grow in a cis woman's uterus and be delivered from her vagina. You don't seem to understand that so much of the fun of fiction is exploring OTHER possibilities. "OK yes, the real world is like this - but what if it wasn't!"

What IF a cis m/m or f/f couple could biologically make a baby just by having sex with each other, like cis het couples do? Do you really think that's not a fantasy that could be interesting or sexy or compelling to read or write about, including for gay or lesbian readers?

Do you really think that no cis het woman ever in a relationship with a man has thought about how they might like to have a kid - if their HUSBAND could carry and give birth instead of them?

If you think no one has ever thought those things, you're wrong.




Most mpreg writers I've read are writing FANTASY fiction where those things are not necessarily true in their worlds. It's called, um, imagination?

As the asshole who wrote those words, I understand the idea in Sci-Fi of exploring outside real-world limitations, something along the lines of Ursula Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness or something. But most MPreg seem to be less about exploring gender roles and more about reinforcing them.

If you note in the previous paragraph, I mentioned one of my objections to the MPreg thing is that, well, even though we've made it into the 21st century, no one seems to be able to envision a relationship where both parties are equal, both loving and support each other. No, we simply have to have one half of the couple be the Super-Manly Super Stud Pillar of Strength, while the other half has to possess all the worst, most regressive feminine stereotypes, being a weepy, whiner with a spine of Kleenex, who always needs to be rescued by the other partner.

It sickens me. When I read about my pet pairing, I want to read about the couple as they are in canon, not following some hackneyed stereotypes. In any case, what would really flip gender roles is, I don't know, maybe the dominant overbearing masculine character is the one who becomes pregnant, while the quieter partner takes care of him. Maybe it turns out the super-femmey character, can actually eff someone up six ways from sunday, because being pretty, girly, and badass mothereffer aren't mutually exclusive. It is possible for someone to rock a prom dress like no one's business and still be a force to be reckoned with. And a character can be a force to be reckoned with, without ever raising a fist or getting their hand on a single weapon.

It's really weird people don't seem to get your point.
I'm avoiding mpreg fics like plague for these same reasons - they are more often than not enforce the stereotypes, just reversed. I'm not very vocal about it though, I guess there are a lot of people like me.

I've been reading fanfiction for various fandoms for a long long while, and mpreg got a blast of popularity at some point around early 2010s. And for some undetermined reason the quality of those was absolutely horrible. Now I think maybe it was because of an age of the writers.. That did nothing to endear me to this kink either...
