“But what if they have a point too? You need to consider both sides.”

“But think of the children.”

“But what about our family values?”

I don't think this is always so bad, tbf. I agree in some cases it's a dealbreaker, but I actually think the idea that there is only one way to think is very destructive. You

Yeah I feel like the "you need to consider both sides" is only inherently dumb/pointless if the person is defending like... racism/ethnic cleansing/other stupid bullshit.

Nayrt

Maybe I've already considered the other side and I disagree?

In a very few cases, I'd agree. But the people saying that rather insultingly assume that the person they're talking to HASN'T considered both sides. As opposed to considering multiple sides and making a decision that person 1 happens to disagree with which is what happens 95% of the time.

This. In theory, there's nothing inherently problematic about suggesting someone consider all sides of an issue before drawing a conclusion, but in practice, it tends to mean "the only way anyone could possibly disagree with me is if they're an idiot who only listened to the wrong side of the debate".

Also, sometimes there aren't valid points on both sides - one side has factual points, and the other side has counterfactual bullshit meant to prop up an opinion that's complete nonsense at best, and actively harmful at worst.
