Weird beliefs that are a deal breaker for you... (inspired by secret 7)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes you back-button out of a situation? What weird beliefs are you okay with?

I dunno. I feel like things that are just so out of left field as to how you could not believe when there's concrete evidence such as flat earthers and holocaust deniers that seem obvious, but I'm not sure what else?

Anti-vaxxers?

Yeah, I'd question the sanity of people who thought the earth was flat or that the Holocaust never happened - especially the latter, because that isn't just kookiness, it reeks of antisemitism. Anti-vaxxers are another deal breaker for me. It's not just the issue itself, it's... ignorance and bad judgment. It's lack of critical thinking skills and refusal to face reality and frankly, people who have those issues tend to be more trouble than they're worth.

Agreed on these.

I'll also throw in the "Sandy Hook and other mass shootings were staged!" dipshits and the people who think Obama wasn't born here and things of that sort. That's a special level of stupidity I just can't begin to fathom, and I could not be around somebody who honest to god believed such insulting, horrible things.

NAYRT—oh ugh, birthers and mass shooting truthers. I tend to forget they’re a thing because luckily I haven’t run into anyone who believes (or at least, tells me about) that bullshit.

Anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers, holocaust deniers, “moonlanding was fake” believers, people who are into homeopathy or believe otc essential oil combos cure cancer, people who believe in lizard people or the illuminati/secret world government cabals, “aliens among us/I was taken to a spaceship and probed by aliens before returning to my suburban bedroom” nuts, “Jesus tells me you’re going to hell” whackos...

I’m sure I’ve forgotten some. I don’t mind religious people in general, or “lavender oil helps me calm down” type herbal enthusiasts, and I believe aliens exist, just not that they’ve secretly been hanging around Earth running experiments on humanity or leaving cryptic messages in cornfields.

Any type of rhetoric around “stupid people shouldn’t breed” or shit like that - even the light implication of eugenics squicks me out. Also once when I was in high school and Obama was the president a classmate told me completely sincerely that she thought Obama was the Antichrist. I just didn’t know what to say to that.

IMO, it's what happens when fundamental conservatism gets a heaping spoonful of racism. I'm related to people who felt the same way. They were just so horrified and repelled by the idea of a brown person as President that of course he must be evil or some crap like that. They literally couldn't conceive of Obama any other way, they didn't have any substantive objections to his platform or policies (because they didn't know his platform or his policies) it was just... OMG brown boogeyman, look out!

“But what if they have a point too? You need to consider both sides.”

“But think of the children.”

“But what about our family values?”

I don't think this is always so bad, tbf. I agree in some cases it's a dealbreaker, but I actually think the idea that there is only one way to think is very destructive. You

Dealbreakers: faith healing, Reiki, Holocaust denial, anti-vaxxer.

People who take conspiracy theories seriously. Like, hardcore and fulltime even when the evidence is barely circumstantial at best. It just gives the impression that 1) they're the kind of person willing to think the worst of someone else, and 2) they think it's okay to do this at someone else's expense as long as there's a chance the theorist could be right.

(For the record, I'm not referring to moments where you trust your gut so that you don't end up getting hurt or killed. I mean people who go, OMG SANDY HOOK WAS A HOAX, I SCREAM FROM 1000 MILES AWAY! A DAD LAUGHED ON CAMERA! THEREFORE I'M JUSTIFIED IN SENDING DEATH THREATS UNTIL THEY SAY SOMETHING THAT SUPPORTS MY BELIEFS!)

the conspiracies that are likely to be true are the ones that there aren't any theories about.

All of them. All of it. I will even hardcore side-eye "I believe in ghosts because one time I heard a noise in my house" people. I'm formerly religious so I don't even take "god did it" people seriously anymore. It all needs to be binned and we need to move into the 21st century with critical thinking and analysis.

LOL! I cut the ghost people some slack but... yeah. Just because something is inexplicable TO YOU doesn't mean that there's a supernatural cause. Lots of stuff is inexplicable to a lot of people because 1) they don't know very much about how stuff works and 2) they haven't actually explored many plausible, real life reasons for why there are bumps in the night, etc.

I am 100% with you re: the critical thinking and analysis.

Re: Weird beliefs that are a deal breaker for you... (inspired by secret 7)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
This. That kind of stuff made sense ages ago when humans didn't have an understanding of natural phenomenon, but now that we do, there's no place for it.

Part of critical thinking is accepting the fact that hard science has yet to be able to explain everything. I believe some people who believe in ghosts are correct in a certain sense; they have experienced something that they need to ascribe a supernatural explanation for because it is something logic hasn't cracked yet.

Ehhhh.

I do personally agree that those beliefs are incorrect. But for most of them, I also just think... what does it matter? As long as they're a reasonable person in terms of how they act and they're not anti-science, and their actual ethical beliefs are reasonable, I just can't really bring myself to care about it that much if they believe in ghosts or God or whatever else.

All of them. All of it.

Yeah, this has to be my answer, too. Like, even someone sincerely believing in astrology makes me feel like we're probably not compatible enough to be more than friendly acquaintances.

I do not think they're a bad person, and I wish them well, but I just...can't.

Anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers, holocaust deniers, hard-line British unionists and Brexiteers, , Islamophobic , misogynist, berks.

I'm ok with any and every faith as long as you don't try to convert me to it

Pretty sure conversion is a basic tenet of both Christianity and Islam

And I am OK with neither one.

I'm kinda in the opposite camp where I'm not a fan of people who are over zealous about much smarter they are conspiracy theorists or whatever. I think anti-vax, flat earthers, and all are total bull, but to not even consider how people can get swept into it turns me off. Making fun of anti-vaxxers just makes them double down. Also doubt most of the complainers get their flu shot either so it's not like they're much better lol

Truth is that there's very little we know first hand and even that is subjected to bias. Everything else we just have to take on goodwill and if kinda sorta makes sense with the little info we've been given.

"Truth is that there's very little we know first hand and even that is subjected to bias. Everything else we just have to take on goodwill..."

... no? I mean sure, there might be a few things we don't understand and have to go on faith, but you're talking like this is how most of the world works. That's not true. When you get in a car, you're not going on blind faith that it won't catch fire and blow up when you put it into gear - that car has gone through years of design and testing, followed by watchdog organizations who keep track of its reliability, etc. Sure, it's not 100% foolproof, but it's definitely not a case of "Oh well, nobody knows whether this will work or not and we have to trust blindly in not dying!"
