Re: Weird beliefs that are a deal breaker for you... (inspired by secret 7)

Ehhhh.

I do personally agree that those beliefs are incorrect. But for most of them, I also just think... what does it matter? As long as they're a reasonable person in terms of how they act and they're not anti-science, and their actual ethical beliefs are reasonable, I just can't really bring myself to care about it that much if they believe in ghosts or God or whatever else.

In a way, you're right that simply believing in those things cause no harm. But remember - people don't just have beliefs in a vacuum. They act upon them, too. My problem with incorrect, sincere beliefs is that they can lead to real damage. For example:

* There's no harm done if people believe in demons. But there is harm done if they decide that their loved one's schizophrenia is caused by demon possession and must be "saved" with an exorcism and they engage in a physically grueling ordeal that ends in their loved one's death by suffocation or starvation or exhaustion.

* There's no harm done if your sweet Aunt Bea believes that her late husband haunts their house and watches over her. But if she believes that a psychic medium can communicate with her dead husband and gives them her life savings to do so, that's actual harm done.
