Haven't seen the show, but that does sound obnoxious.

It's a genre convention, like how something always gave House a sudden insight into the solution of a disease, or how prophecies always come true but you can't tell what they mean until they do, or how plans always work unless they tell the reader the plan, and then they always fail.
