I wonder if the reboot will stick with the rampant queerbaiting that was present in the manga. That ought to piss off some modern day fans.

I'm still pissed about Akito.

And this series is one of the most egregious cases I've encountered of Everyone Ends Up in a Neat Heterosexual Relationship Ending too.

And Babies Ever After if the sequel is anything to go by.

There's a sequel??
Yikes.

Are you the same person who continues to not understand what queerbaiting means and needs it explained to you every time that Fruits Basket didn't queerbait because nobody was expected to think any characters were actually queer or had a chance at a queer relationship? What was there was always presented as typical Japanese "it's just a childhood phase" bullshit.

because nobody was expected to think any characters were actually queer or had a chance at a queer relationship?

Pretty sure people were at least expecting Akito to be a fucking male (therefore queering the whole situation with Shigure) until that last minute asspull. Also, culture doesn't excuse it from being literal queerbait used to bring in fujos. Accept it for what it is rather than make excuses for shitty writing, weeab.

This. There is no way Akito was planned to be a woman from the start and it's glaringly obvious.

My point is that nobody expected Akito to ever be in a canon gay relationship when Akito was a man. Rewriting something to make it heteronormative because it was accidentally turning too gay is actually, like, the opposite of queerbaiting. Takaya did not originally make Akito out to be a man in order to give readers false hope for a gay relationship.

Personally, I think queerbaiting might not be the entirely right word to use here but it was very much an intentional gay shiptease and not "accidental". I mean, the whole thing had pretty terrible writing but the mangaka wasn't that oblivious.

NAYRT

Are you sure about that though? She made a fair few characters in the cast have suggestive relationships with same-sex peers, and I can't see what the point of that would be other than to draw in female readers with queer tropes. Having no intention of ever going through with said queerness doesn't make it NOT queerbaiting. Just the opposite.

The only ones who seemed remotely queer were Ayame and the guy he seemed to crush on was repeatedly not interested.

Also I am 90% sure he and his girlfriend are bisexual and polyamorous.

What about Haru?
