Body horror is a fairly big part of Luther's character, and that's something that gets a wide range of reactions? I'm sure an Anon will show up to tell you they found it hot, lol.

I just wish they'd used sturdier foam so people could touch his arms without squishing them.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
That would've been good too. There’s points where he looks more like a kid whose mom went overboard with the layers before letting him out to play in the snow.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
True. I try to rationalize it a little by thinking it's part to do with all that hair he's got under there.

Body Horror is number one on my list of things that freak me the fuck out, but Luther just didn't ping my body horror squick. Still, there definitely is an element of body horror in what is done to Luther. I guess it's just not the particular dynamic of body horror that gets under my skin.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm the same.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. I just thought geez, that guy has a tiny head for his body.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. That and “Who decided that photoshoping a tiny head onto a bigass body was a good idea?”

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
DA

1. I'm pretty sure it's a practical effect, not CGI.
2. It may look a bit silly, but it's not like there's anything else they could've done. They couldn't make a muscle suit for his head. And presumably if they'd attempted to enlarge his head using CGI it would've been way too expensive and probably looked a whole lot more distracting and unreal than the practical effect did.

His body does not bother me at all. I'm a fan of Tom Hopper, and in Black Sails he's got the nickname 'Billy Biceps'. I laughed when I first say him, but only because I could imagine Hopper's arms have just gotten that big since BS.

(Obviously I know it's just padding, but he's so buff normally that I can look at this character and not even flinch.)

In Merlin, they just chopped the sleeves off his chainmail.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh that's where I know him from! Thanks anon. It's been driving me nuts.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
With arms that strong, chainmail would only get in the way. He could block whatever came at him just by flexing, I bet.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, that's where I know him from! I only ever watched the first season of BS ages ago so it never clicked. Thank you.

no problem!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ohh, you should totally finish it! The whole thing is amazing, I totally recommend it!

Honestly for the first episodes before it's made a bit more obvious I thought maybe I just forgot how Big he is. Now I just think of this and also how absolutely awful it must be being on set in both a giant padded suit and like 2 sweaters and a jacket all the damn time.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Aw man, now I can't unsee it! It's a mix between that, and a very badly made blowup doll;; Honestly I'm surprised you can't see him melting at the end of each scene.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-05 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I just assumed that the clothes under the jacket were sleeveless, or even just a dickie (like what Howard wears on Big Bang Theory, so it's just a pretend piece of clothing) so that mostly what the actor was wearing was the body suit and the jacket, with just enough under the jacket to look like he was fully dressed. And that would also mean no one had to try and pull all those clothes on and off over the body suit, just, like, fasten it around his neck, attach it to his pants or around his waist so it looks like clothes, and go. It was probably still really, really uncomfortable, but not as bad as being fully dressed on top of the gorilla torso suit.
