The Akito twist will never not be a massive, hamfisted asspull.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
What was the twist?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He was a she.

What makes that hamfisted? Never read it, genuine question. Gender bait-and-switch can be fun.

Different anon here...

...for almost the entire series we are led to believe Akito is male. There's really no implication Akito is anything else.

Then it turns out that actually Akito was only treated as male for [reasons] and it's just that most of the characters are young enough to not have been there when Akito began to be referred to/treated as male that it basically became a Big Family Secret that nobody is let in on. There are several characters that do know the secret (the aforementioned Shigure that is definitely shown to have ~feelings~ and/or a rather unhealthy-probably-romantic-kind-of relationship with Akito...I ate that shit up when I read this actually) but nobody even alludes to it being a secret until the very end when Events Happen that make it so Akito basically comes out as actually female to the rest of the cast.

Doesn't help that Akito is in the anime and is coded very masculine there to include being voiced by men. There's no reason not to think Akito is male until the secret is revealed near the end of the manga.

I personally was pretty disappointed by the reveal. Not necessarily because of ~het ever after~ or anything...it just felt lazy? Unnecessary?

I guess it was supposed to also give some motivation to why Akito is the way Akito is in the story (pretty messed up and abusive, tbh) since Akito was also treated in a messed up and abusive way from an early age but...idk. It still felt unnecessary.

The anime producers clearly had no idea, which seems to hint that at that point in the series, the mangaka had no plan to make that reveal either, because otherwise I don’t know why she wouldn’t have told them.

yea being voiced by a man seems pretty damning to me. it's been a while since i was into anime, but afaik there is usually no compulsion to use female voice actors for pretty boys? so it wouldn't even have been giving away the ~great plot twist~ to use one.

I always saw it not only as a way of explaining why Akito is such a shitheel, but also of emphasizing the full extent of the damage of the family traditions. Akito was the most powerful and prestiged among them, the "god", but she's still harmed by being forced into a specific box based on that role the same as the rest.
