The only difference I would say there is is that Harry Potter wasn't a romance novel series so it was probably even more unnecessary for it to have all those "het-pair the spares" and "babies ever after" than in a manga series in the shoujo genre where these thing are kind of par of the course. That said, I hated just about everything about the forced pairings in Fruits Basket (but I can't stand the whole thing in general).

(Anonymous) 2019-03-06 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
In before "queerbaiting!!1!1" anon still not getting it.

I agree with you though. The manga got boring after the anime ended, and I liked the open ending of the anime.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-06 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Multiple people have argued against you and your dumb assertion that "it's not queerbaiting!!", anon. Maybe accept that you're wrong rather than carry on this bizarre paranoid vendetta against this one person.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you wanna get pedantic and insist it's not queerbaiting on the basis that it was clear (to you) that no gay ships would happen, the author still shoved a shit ton of gay bait (implications that Kyo and Yuki have UST - noted by characters in universe no less, Haru admitting Yuki was his first love and telling him - in our introduction to his character - that "today, you will be mine", Ayame being flamboyant and flirting with Shigure, Shigure's love and obsession for Akito until the author decided to make him a woman at the last minute, Rin's everything, I don't remember too well but I'm pretty sure there were even shoujo ai implications from Tohru's friend, etc.) in order to gain traction among fujoshi and slash fans. Only to not only shit all over that, but pair literally every single character into a het ship. Whatever argument you're trying to make in favour of Takaya, it's pretty flimsy fam.

The Akito twist will never not be a massive, hamfisted asspull.

I for one will enjoy all the sexuality and gender identity wank and drama. Akito and Ayame's were such a trainwreck.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know he was a more minor character, but I read through this entire thread and I can’t believe nobody brought up Ritsu, the ultra-feminine crossdresser who chose to do that to deal with his anxiety and seemed fine with it, but then in the very last chapter cut his hair and started wearing male clothing and got a girlfriend! Because he isn’t “cursed” anymore (literally but also maybe not given all the context).

This author played around with gender and sexuality A LOT for a shoujo manga, but boy did she make a mess of it in every way possible.

I only ever saw the original anime and that was over a decade ago.. so what happened in the final chapter? And was there queerbaiting or something?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It’s been a while, but pretty much everyone got married and had babies.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
No, there wasn't any queerbaiting, because it was very clear from the beginning that there weren't going to be any queer ships - it was a shoujo manga, for crying out loud. Shoujo is all about the het romances.

I see most people not excited about it because the series has aged so damn poorly. Between the Akito asspull, underaged relationships, hamfisted abuse, and the cop out way the love triangle ended the reboot is going to be a disaster in modern western fandom climate. but it’s not like the west is really the target audience.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Underaged relationships?

Underaged by our laws, or Japan's?

No shade here, I saw the series about 100 years ago, don't remember much of it, and never read the manga, so I'm just curious.

The abuse is what I remember the most from the series. Everybody had such abusive, shitty families.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
When the Akito asspull happened there was so much infighting between people who considered it revolutionary and feminist and people who were pissed, and the latter lost the purity contest because it was decided they were just misogynists and upset "he" wasn't a hot guy anymore.

...I don't know about other places, but that's exactly how I'd expect it to go down on Tumblr today.

I never watched the first anime, but I read the manga for the hype and I never got it. And would you believe that the final stretch which resolved all the romances was the part that annoyed me the most.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-06 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so glad that I stopped reading this manga (which I was really enjoying in the beginning when I was a teenager) when I heard of the "Actually, you're totes like my surrogate-mother!"- thing.

And then the Akito thing happened and I was glad to have never bought the manga. (It came out in one of the monthly magazines here and I tended to buy the manga I liked from them)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Because...Fruits Basket was never as big of a cultural phenomenon as Harry Potter? I mean, that's the most obvious reason you don't see as much criticism as you do of Rowling.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of surprised it took till this far in the thread for someone to mention this.

Nostalgia? It was a lot of people's first shoujo and the idea was quite interesting and new at the time.

Disclaimer: Never read the manga, just saw the anime so I got my info. from second hand.

That said, some stuff didn't age well, I agree. The way Yuki/Tohru romance was resolved made me laugh irl because damn, what a dumb way to solve the love triangle even when I was a Kyou/Tohru shipper. Also Shigure... oh Shigure, I liked you a lot but then the plot twist happened and I was left like "OH".

Reading these comments haha, I had no idea Fruits Basket had so much drama. I only ever saw the anime, and all I remember about it is that it made me smile, I actually remember finding the main girl's kindness and hard-working spirit really moving and recall some of the other mains being really cute. It does sound like the manga wrapped up in a pretty lame way, good thing the anime never got that far. I wonder if the anime holds up?

I think I'm one of the few ppl here who enjoyed the anime and manga both. I think I liked the manga better. That aside I'm not in disagreement with some of the crappy ships asspulled out at the emd. I did like Tohru/Kyo tho.

I'd like to think a remake means a chance to fix stuff. I know I won't get to see Hana/Tohru or Momoiji/Tohru but maybe Ayame and his assistant will be clearer/make more sense and Shigure/Akito never happens.

to answer your question: -most- people only watched the anime and/or dropped off of the fandom before things went to complete shit. they remember cute bubbly Tohru and all the pretty boys who turn into animals and serve up angst, and not much else.
