Nostalgia? It was a lot of people's first shoujo and the idea was quite interesting and new at the time.

Disclaimer: Never read the manga, just saw the anime so I got my info. from second hand.

That said, some stuff didn't age well, I agree. The way Yuki/Tohru romance was resolved made me laugh irl because damn, what a dumb way to solve the love triangle even when I was a Kyou/Tohru shipper. Also Shigure... oh Shigure, I liked you a lot but then the plot twist happened and I was left like "OH".

Akito was so spectacularly fucked up from the gender thing, I was just fine with the reveal - I felt it made for some interesting emotional ramifications.

And Shigure... I don't know what I *thought* his sexuality was pre-reveal. He's a weirdly chilly, alien person (while fighting for the souls of his cousins), who happens to put on a good front of joviality.

Whether he was bi or straight or gay or pan or demi or - it just didn't, *to me*, seem relevant to the story being told. He loved Akito. Akito was fucked up. He was fighting to thwart Akito. He loved Akito...

[Spoilers ahoy!]

Oh, my issue with Shigure wasn't much about his sexuality as much as him just going "I just met and you're not even born yet but here's my number marry me" to Akito like... damn, son. His whole relationship with Akito is a huge Mexican soap opera. Also him just willing to throw people under the bus to get Akito. He gets better at least, but my feelings toward him went from "You seem nice" to "Jesus Christ, Shigure". A very complicated feeling.

Akito was fucked up and I could see where she was coming from: Her upbringing was fucked up, being raised like a little emperor and also having everyone enabling her but also bearing a huge responsibility, etc.

I'm glad they are happy together, though. And I really hope Akito could get some therapy. And Shigure too. Don't fight it, Shigure. Get therapy.

I have to say...no matter what Akito's gender was, I still would've eaten up Akito and Shigure's fucked up, sort of co-dependent, lovehatesomething relationship with a spoon.

I also rather loved that Shigure went from being this goofy guy stereotype to actually being rather calculating and...I'm not sure what word I want here. But the fact he had this mask when in reality he is basically a very different person was fascinating. I even RP'd him for a while because I liked exploring his personality.
