I see most people not excited about it because the series has aged so damn poorly. Between the Akito asspull, underaged relationships, hamfisted abuse, and the cop out way the love triangle ended the reboot is going to be a disaster in modern western fandom climate. but it’s not like the west is really the target audience.

When the Akito asspull happened there was so much infighting between people who considered it revolutionary and feminist and people who were pissed, and the latter lost the purity contest because it was decided they were just misogynists and upset "he" wasn't a hot guy anymore.

...I don't know about other places, but that's exactly how I'd expect it to go down on Tumblr today.

Christ, I remember seeing some of that. I doubt tumblr would construe "the most irrational, villainous, hateful character in the series is actually a woman" twist as a point towards feminism. I also don't think they'll take kindly to her being forced into being trans.
