Tbh, the movie is aged. If that film came out today, I think people would find it amusing but uninspired, and a little too theatrical for cinema.

That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means that the style and pace of movies have changed over the last 30 years. There's very few movies from the 1980s that you could release today and have people not react that way. Styles change with the times. It's still a delightful movie with lots of good qualities.

I think the theatricality works well in the context of the film, as it's within the framing device of the grandfather telling the story and the action playing out in a young boy's mind.
