This movie is so quotable and the cast is classic.

Secret: I find it pretty boring to watch and wouldn't mind if they remade it.

Bonus: I'd like to see Wesley and Buttercup's roles swapped. Dread Pirate Buttercup!

Not Secret: I'm sure if they remade it they'd botch it by casting young and blandly attractive actors and having a completely unsuitable director.

Please, please, please, let's not remake it. Make The Dragon Horde or some other fantasy book instead of an old movie.

How about an adaption of the original Princess Bride book that is closer to the original book? Though admittedly the movie is already one of the better adaptions of a book.

DA

Well, the adaptation was by the author of the original book, William Goldman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of the original screenplay for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the adapted screenplay for All the President's Men. I've read the book and seen the movie and read about Goldman adapting it and it's hard for me to fathom someone else doing a better job. And he can't do another adaptation, since he died in November.

I don't think there is any way that current Hollywood could make this without fucking it up somehow.

I do like the idea of the role swap though!

Complete same.

Hollywood should remake it, or make more movies like it. Hollywood is completely incapable of making movies like it, unfortunately.

Tbh, the movie is aged. If that film came out today, I think people would find it amusing but uninspired, and a little too theatrical for cinema.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't mean it's bad, it just means that the style and pace of movies have changed over the last 30 years. There's very few movies from the 1980s that you could release today and have people not react that way. Styles change with the times. It's still a delightful movie with lots of good qualities.

I think the theatricality works well in the context of the film, as it's within the framing device of the grandfather telling the story and the action playing out in a young boy's mind.

I just wish I could understand what Andre the giant was saying in that movie.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's not his fault being the biggest and strongest. He doesn't even exercise.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
After hearing about how frail the actor was in real life and how painful doing that movie was for him, I can't really enjoy this line anymore.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
If Andre was OK doing the line, I'm OK enjoying it. IDK, I get where you're coming from.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. He chose to do it. He didn't need the money, he wasn't forced to do it. From what I recall of Cary Elwes' biography, everybody on the set loved him and thought he was a great guy. I can think of worse ways to spend my time.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
That was pretty much my reaction. I watched it for the first time around 2 years ago, and while I could totally understand why it's popular, it was just kind of a slough to get through for me.

I won't lie, 80% of my enjoyment of this movie is nostalgia/it feels like an old friend. A remake just wouldn't have that going for it for me.

I don't think there would be much point in remaking it. People remember so many lines from the movie already and changing it a lot just wouldn't appeal to most people. (The general idea of a female being a heroic dread pirate does sound pretty cool though.)

I'm not actually a huge fan of the movie. I liked the smart-ass tone of the book that didn't carry over as much to the movie. But everyone just looks at me blankly when I say that and tells me the author wrote the screenplay like that means I'm not allowed to have an opinion about it.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that the tone doesn't quite carry over, and the book is sharper. And I think that's actually a good reason to remake it! You can do that differently. So that's 2 good reasons to remake it, along with having Kristen Stewart play Dread Pirate Buttercup.
