Iirc that whole thing with the ship retreating was a thinly veiled call back to a real political event (the Falklands?) because sometimes RTD couldn't resist, and I actually remember the whole way that particularly scene was done was met with a fair bit of derision at the time.

I do have to admit I enjoy that it spawned "doesn't X look tired" as a meme - unfortunately we've all found out it's actually not so easy to depose someone with just a phrase in real life.

I'm actually with you on the Donna thing too. I hate that the ONLY solution they could come up with was "eh..wipe her memories I guess?"

the belgrano, i think

which obviously made harriet jones into margaret thatcher, which is just cruelty

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he was a dickhead
And I wish they'd spent a little more time on "hey, remember how you undermined this perfectly decent PM? Wanna know who replaced her? `°*☆The Master☆*°' :D :D :D "

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that would have been glorious!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That element is definitely present, I think

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Murdering people who are retreating is bad

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But but, he only took her out of power because he doesn't respect women! Or something.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Harriet Jones: You're not here all the time and we need to take things into consideration ourselves

The Doctor: Well then I'm going to treat you like a child, show exactly how much power I have over you, and then leave again

And as anon said on another comment, his actions paved the way for Saxon to take over while he disappeared again, which kinda proved her point.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that his solution to the problem was not good, but I disagree that her actions were understandable or reasonable. She was not in the right!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Understandable isn't the same as right. I think what she did was wrong, but I also think it was an understandable reaction to what happened. The Doctor would leave, and maybe the Sycorax would come back. She had no way of knowing.

She was wrong. Absolutely wrong. But there is a level of wrong that makes it okay to intervene in someone else's government. She was in no way near to that level. He didn't have the right. She was wrong, but he was way more wrong than she was.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, where exactly do you draw that line? The reason he was wrong was because he responded in a way that was arbitrary and capricious and based more on his wounded pride than on making a substantive change. And obviously those are all big themes in the show. But I am not sure why you're drawing the line there and whether it's not just because it's the kind of violence we consider normal in our society.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I personally would draw the line at outright dictators/villain leaders. Otherwise, the Doctor intervening to change who is in charge of a government that is not his own isn't okay to me.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
But "dictator" and "villain" - those are pretty wonky categories. Like, "villain" is just an index of how the show portrays a character, isn't it? And dictator is tough because it's pretty easy to imagine a society that's not dictatorial, that's totally democratic and open, and also does completely horrible awful things. So again, I just think it's difficult to figure out these lines. And murdering retreating enemies is a pretty bad thing to do.

Why are all the Doctor Who secrets garbage?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Make better ones, then. There's no need to be rude.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah.

I'm sure you've never been blunt in response to a stupid opinion in your life.

What did he do? Someone who hasn't watched Doctor Who asking.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Used Time Lord Powers to start a rumor leading to her downfall as a politician, ending the Golden Age Of Mankind and leading to a power void ultimately filled by the Master (who is a no-good very-bad man)

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That really pissed me off about the Tenth Doctor. The Ninth had more of a sense of the limitations and foibles of humans, I think.

YES. THANK YOU. I will never forgive Ten for that. The Doctor is supposed to be good. He's not supposed to use the ingrained systemic misogyny on Earth to get what he wants and destroy a woman's career by manipulating the prejudices of others.
