I have to wonder if Vanya would receive even a fraction of the hate she gets if she were a pretty white twink.

Who am I kidding, male!Vanya would be everyone's favorite woobie.

Honestly.

Any character who is constantly 'woe is me' is annoying as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
But if they're dudes, they get away with it.

Maybe for others, but for me, *any* character. Like, for instance, every fucking vampire ever (ANGEL) that moped around because they were eeeeeeeeevol. Omfg, go stand in the sun.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
But those vampires are incredibly popular, that's the point I'm trying to make. You may not feel the same affinity for these characters, but whiny "woe is me" cute male characters are overwhelmingly adored.

This.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You definitely have a point, but personally, I find Klaus just as annoying as Vanya.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
So do I, but one is the most popular character and the other is almost as hated as Luther. Which kind of says it all.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
What does it say? Klaus was funny and tragic and a bit crazy.

A better comparison is Luther vs Vanya. They are both one note characters who suck all the fun out of a scene. Guess what! They are both commonly referred to as the worst characters.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Boy, this comment is chock full of subjective opinion. We get it, Klaus is your woobie husbando. I'm sure you'd feel the same about Vanya if she were played by a quirky cute little white boy as well.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Diego is my favorite, but go off.

I also like that you don't even touch my second point. Is it because it is true and you can't argue against it?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Luther ain't a pretty white twink either, so point is moot.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
The point is that the two most boring characters are the most hated. It has nothing to do with being a 'pretty white twink' and everything to do with just how bland Vanya/Luther are.

If you look outside of traditional fandom, Klaus is even the favorite there. Unless you think a bunch of 30 year old dude bros and the like are just in love with the 'pretty white twink'?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
If you look outside of traditional fandom, Vanya is the most hated, moreso than Luther. Funny, that, almost like...female characters get shat on more by virtue of being female.

Like come on, are you seriously denying there isn't a double standard among fandom culture in regards to how female characters are treated when male characters who hold the same traits get away with it?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
What I've see on Reddit is Luther being the most disliked above Vanya. On Tumblr, it is the same. On AO3, it is the same thing.

The same on all three platforms with Klaus being the most liked.

Seems like it might have to do more with how bland their characters are but who knows, maybe it isn't that. Even though all the evidence shows that.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I know, it's not fair.

I don't hate Luther. He's a terrible leader, but I understand why, just like I understand why Vanya is the way she is - vulnerable to someone like... uh, that guy she dates, because he's the first person to treat her like she's a person who matters. Luther annoys me less maybe because I'm an oldest child and in a leadership position in my family that I'm also ill qualified for.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
And I liked them both. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I find it funny we've had like 4 secrets about how awful Vanya is, but none about Luther. Keep up that misogyny, fandomsecrets!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Because everyone hates Luther. Vanya has people who like her and people who hate her. But I've yet to see anyone who likes Luther. People either hate him or ignore him.

So, why would you make a secret about hating a character that everyone does. It would be like making a secret going, "I thought Voldemort was an asshole." Yeah, no shit.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Luther has a growing number of defenders on tumblr, from what I've seen.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
And how much you want to bet those defenders ALSO like Vanya? I am willing to bet they are the ones who talk about how all the siblings have trauma and deserve forgiveness. Which I agree with, btw.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-10 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
This. Luther hate is pretty much a generally accepted thing in the fandom. EVERYONE hates Luther, there's really no dissenting opinion there.
