I know this is a common opinion on Vanya and most of the people I've recc'd the show to weren't fans of her, but I honestly really like her, sad panda-ness and all. She was my favorite character in the comics too, so that helped.

I liked her. I liked all of them to be honest, though Luther definitely is at the bottom of my list. I find it hard to dislike any of them when they're all fucked up for a lot of reasons, mostly from a really shit childhood.

Because everyone hates Luther. Vanya has people who like her and people who hate her. But I've yet to see anyone who likes Luther. People either hate him or ignore him.

So, why would you make a secret about hating a character that everyone does. It would be like making a secret going, "I thought Voldemort was an asshole." Yeah, no shit.

BUT - she got screwed over harder than any of the other kids, and while I don't like her final actions, I do understand why that's a choice she'd make (if she was even capable of being rational at that point).

THIS. They were all living in a situation of extreme chronic abuse. Not a single one of them got anything less than hellish treatment. But Vanya got several extra helpings of horrible.

I didn't dislike Vanya, but I didn't warm up to her either. I recognized her siblings, save maybe Five, were assholes to her most of her life, and I sympathized, but Vanya was just so dull--for good reasons of course, but still boring as fuck. When she was locked in a cell without a bucket to piss in-- that's when I started rooting for her.

Plus, Ellen Page looks A+++ in a tuxedo.

I questioned my sexuality when Vanya turned into the White Violin because she looked so freaking good in that outfit. I'm so glad they went with the tuxedo instead of the skintight monstrosity she got in the comics.

I haven't seen the show yet, but from what I've read about character synopsis, it sounds like Vanya is the neglected sibling and told she's not special or relevant? Which sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to be upset about? My brother was treated the same way by my father growing up and I've seen first hand that it can be horribly damaging. I think I'd also have a complex if my family had super powers, while I had nothing, I think most people would? I don't understand why she's so hated.
