Well, it's someone that Wil Wheaton, a man in his 40s, calls his mom, so presumably she's been called Gates for quite a while at this point.

I suppose it's possible that you've never heard of Wil Wheaton, either, but considering that he's the former child actor who won't go away, then it is equally possible that the rock you've been living under was hurled into space sometime in the mid 1970s and you just got back to Earth a couple of weeks ago.

Gates McFadden played Wil Wheaton's mom on Star Trek: The Next Generation in the late 1980s.

She used Cheryl as a puppeteer but didn’t want people to know she was working on a regular show so went by Gates.

Yep, fun fact: She did choreography for Labyrinth.

This a weird comment to me in two ways. One, because she's an actor and a lot of actors have stage names. Two, because I've heard of much stranger given names - Pilot Inspektor, Abcde, Apple, Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii (though the NZ court made her a ward of the court so she could change it), Moon Unit, etc.

Those are definitely no better. Also watched this youtube video and the chick named her son Oakley and her daughter Emerson. Wtf?

Emerson was super common for girls about 10 years ago, along with Addison and Madison.

I actually know a few male Oakley’s. They’re all either 80+ or born pre-1930s (seen they records). It might just be an old family name or something that was common in the area several decades ago.

So yeah, IDGAF if he calls Gates an affectionate term.
