[Overwatch League]

No idea what is considered 'good' vs 'average' for professional video game players but... isn't the point to win? Why would you keep a mediocre player (regardless of sex) on your team if there are better players out there?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-11 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk. That's definitely how some people feel about it. But as a sports fan, there are definitely times for me personally where my enjoyment of my team isn't directly aligned with whether they win or lose. There are times when I'm OK with my teams playing worse players because I just like them, or they're a legend of the team. and there are times when I don't want my team to sign players, even if they're good, if they annoy me or seem like terrible people.

So... it's complicated, but I definitely get where OP is coming from.

I get the not wanting to sign good players if they're terrible people, I feel that way about baseball. Like, I don't care what your record is like if you're a shitstain (sometimes both on and off the field).

... Are you familiar with the term "sabermetrics," also known as "moneyball?" You keep a 'mediocre' player because you're building a team, not competing as an individual. A team can be greater than the sum of its players if you manage your people correctly.

Money.

Dallas Fuel kept a good player on their team last season despite not having him play for half a season (to the cries of many fans saying his talent was wasted there) purely because of money.

More views and fans = more money.

LoL is as much a show as it is a sports event

... I still miss Moscow5, they had some amazing wins as well as some terrible plays, but they were always entertaining to watch...

Ok so... here's my problem with how people usually rate player quality for e-sports shit. It's usually about KDR or stats rankings.

But here's the thing, that's not all there is to a match. It really depends on the game type. Let's use a capture the flag type scenario: being better at defense and support is a more valuable skill than just getting a high kill count. Being able to make assists is something a lot of players just can't get their head around, but it's a fucking huge boon to a team if you have someone on it that can reliably do so.

So yeah, I've never seen her play or anything, but I automatically side-eye anyone who says someone isn't a very good player just because they don't have the best stats.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Plus, in a game like Overwatch, stats can be really misleading.

I think she is fairly average. She certainly isn't the worst. Her DVa yesterday was pretty fucking amazing. Hell, she even got picks as baby Dva!

It helps that this is a really good meta for her. She is a great off tank (not so much main tank).

(Anonymous) 2019-03-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
TBF, it’s not her job to play main tank.

Also, I honestly wonder how SHD would fare if they also allowed her to flex to the Brigette role. The casters (I think it was Uber?) mentioned that they were expecting her to play that as she was one of the firsts to explore Brigette’s kit really well.

I also wish we’d get a chance to see her Zarya again...

I side-eye anyone who says she’s an average player, no matter who they are. Despite what anyone says, she’s undoubtedly under a specific kind of pressure that no other player struggles with considering they’re all dudes. I’ll evaluate her play by myself. And so far I think she’s doing okay. SHD has way more problems than her anyway, even if she is really average.

Like suddenly getting used to a new main tank after scrimming with your previous one all off-season.

Compared to other OWL players, she is fairly average in her role. She isn't the worst (that would be everyone on Florida Mayhem) but she isn't top tier.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
So... wait. Maybe this is an issue of how different people use words differently but for me, "average" would mean... okay. Not bad but not great either. And you describe her playing as okay. So I'm not sure why you'd "sideye" anyone for basically agreeing with you.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but while I would rate her as average too, there's a helluva lot of sexist opinions regarding her play. I personally don't trust most people's opinions on her level of play until I find out they're not sexist because the esports community is still incredibly sexist and misogynist. Like OP of secret, I'd still defend her even if she was bad. And even people who view her as average can rate other average players as better than her simply because they're male.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think half of the OWL teams ran on player bias honestly? If they weren’t, they’d all probably be replaced with Koreans.

I also saw some people comparing other leagues to OWL, in that other league favors selling the game/matches, OWL seems to ‘sell’ the players instead, so to speak.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I respect her a lot, especially since she’s a rare female in eSports, but she’s definitely not the best D.Va in the league.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
God, video games being considered a sport with any skill besides dumb luck is so fucking ridiculous. Yes, I know I sound like an old person, but e-sports is fucking dumb.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
you don't sound like an old person, you sound like a moron

(Anonymous) 2019-03-12 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm sure you'd be all for banning sports like Snooker, darts and golf from the holy realm of "real serious sportz(tm)", huh?
