I think that's true but was it actually the point of the movie?

nayrt - Nope. Ayrt is the one missing the point if they believe "they're all assholes" was the message.

I thought they were all assholes but that the point of the movie is that anything they did wrong was the fault of their parents because kids are just great and full of love unlike adults. But I only saw the movie once and that was back in the 80s when it came out so I'm willing to admit I could be wrong.

The kids were assholes, they were even honest about it, about the shit they did to each other. The janitor even calls them out on it, about the shit he sees every day in the school halls.

I don't know how many times I've seen the movie. I was in school when the movie came out and it was pretty true in many ways.

I just remember Andrew implying that the only reason he picked on other kids was that his father encouraged him to, and Bender implying that part of why he was an asshole was that he was abused. (Not to make light of abuse.) So in my mind some of it was about "See, these kids are all nice and all get along when mean adults don't pit them against each other." But I think some of it rang true for me too.

Well, there's a nugget of truth in there, though. It's exaggerated for effect, of course, but I thought the whole idea was that abuse is a cycle and comes in many forms-- literally all of those kids were abused, just in different ways, causing them to act out in the ways they did. I don't believe that there are many (if any) kids who are just bad from the start. It comes from somewhere. And it's usually parents fucking their kids up.

But the kids then grow up to be the parents and fuck up their own kids. I mean the parents didn't start out bad either. Not saying it isn't true, just that it's depressing and I think it's kind of glossed over in the movie.
